Sample Philosophy

The fundamental goal of teaching is to foster learning. I believe each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. I know the classroom setting can encourage or inhibit learning depending on the dominant learning style of each student. It is my desire as a science teacher to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, encourages independent thinking, and invites sharing ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment: (1) having the teacher act as a guide, (2) allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his or her learning through inquiry, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.

As I serve as a guide, I will provide students access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, opportunities for primary investigation based on student questions, and the time and flexibility to explore. All of this will be accomplished in a supportive environment that respects the learning of each individual.

The students’ search for knowledge will be met as they learn to find answers to their questions, construct knowledge, discover for themselves, and apply skills in authentic situations. Equally important to this self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant in their lives while also addressing the curriculum learning goals. Developing a curriculum around student interests fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. When students have ownership, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals. The standards provide the guidance needed for developing a learning continuum that will assure students gain understanding of the science content as well as the skills to do science. At the same time, formative assessment assures all students have acquired prerequisite knowledge.

I believe that respect for my students is one of the most important things I can show, not only to encourage their openness to the concepts they are confronting but also to inspire them to respect each other and all other people. Helping students develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and the environment occurs through an open sharing of ideas. When the voice of each student is acknowledged and the environment encourages students to feel free to express themselves, they will develop self-confidence and respect for others. I believe children have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and learning opportunities when they feel safe and sure of what is expected of them. When the teacher sets fair and consistent expectations and states the importance of every activity, students are shown respect for their thinking, products, and effort.

I am a science teacher because I have a passion for guiding students through the learning process, in addition to a passion for the science material I present. One of the best ways to foster learning is to demonstrate those feelings to my students. I am a lifelong learner and will continue to seek out learning opportunities throughout my career. As an educator, I instill a love of learning in my students as I share my own passion for science and learning with them. I feel there is a need in our society for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. I am one of those individuals.
