Notes of the last meeting and matters arising

Page 2 of previous set of minutes: the day service unit/building in Basingstoke has closed but the service still exists. The focus point is The Discovery Centre.

Hampshire LD Partnership Board: Steve felt that the meeting went well but we can improve on things. The Chair felt that there were improvements that could be made to make it more accessible for LIG reps and it was important to take note of the issues raised by some of the LIG reps which were forwarded to Steve.

LIG reps would like to invite Steve to their next reps meeting (Bernadette/Flo sorting)

There was agreement that SDS is not working in the way that was originally planned. Steve said that this is the picture nationally hence the Hampshire wide review. Many people at the self-advocacy day were not aware of SDS nor whether they had been involve in a supported self assessment.

Mo Rowe has volunteered to come to the Partnership Board meeting.

Health Feedback from reps:

Marcia went to the Discovery Centre in Basingstoke and asked questions about health/GPs/hospitals. Care is generally good but 50% of people said that most GP/hospital staff speak to the support worker not to the person with LD.

1/3 of people did not understand what the doctor said.

It was noted that a higher percentage of people with LD, compared to general population, have had hospital admissions which raises the question of whether this is because they have more health problems or is it that the minor health issues are not being treated early enough.

It is a similar picture for dentists.

Some people don’t go to the dentist at all.

Bernard asked about dentists for people with people with a learning disability. There are specialist dentists in Basingstoke and Aldershot and they are particularly skilled in treating people with multiple disabilities. Mo added that the community dentist in Basingstoke is excellent.

Ambulance service tends to be excellent.

Frances said that she changed her doctor and Ian likes his doctor.

Ken said that the hospital experience had been quite good (so far).

CCG’s: the NHS reforms mean that we are moving from PCT to CCG (GP’s lead consortium). Dr Hugh Freeman is the clinical director for North CCG.

Hospital Liaison nurses can make a big difference but do not work across boundaries (ie Hampshire/Surrey Borders). The LD liaison nurse at Frimley Park only works with adults not children.

Health issues from the Blue LIG:

Physio – Alison Cooper needs to fundraise for physio and communication needs & Speech therapy. Frances would like more physio in order to stop reduction in her mobility but there appears to be difficulty accessing this.

This raised an issue about lack of continuity and access for these services all of which are preventative therapies and support people’s general well being.

Referrals and sign posting could be shared with Surrey and Borders.

Hydrotherapy – limited in Farnborough

Ian Penfold – “getting it right” charter from Mencap – Partnership Board to support this please

Shortage of speech and language therapists – not just Hampshire wide but nationally – long waiting list

The questions from our LIG will need to go to Flo soon after the next LIG meeting.

Self advocacy conference day at the Hilton in Basingstoke

A good day with loads feedback on health and how people look after their health) and awareness raising. Marcia found the day interesting. Sam went to the staying safe workshop with the police. Ian enjoyed the “Firestone” live band. There was a “questions and answer” panel. The day was filmed by the local college.

Other things:

Bernadette discussed with Steve and Flo the idea of having a longer Partnership Board with longer breaks and lunch break if we are having 2 topics at once i.e 10 am to 2 pm or 10 am to 2.30 pm. Flo organising. Partnership Board in April to start of with complex needs and safeguarding as a second agenda item.

Candy will be coming to the LIG as much as her diary allows.

Reducing risk of choking for people with a learning disability:

Telecare from the you trust can improve people lives. 200+ people every year use technology like this. If you would like more information, please email for more information. Alison mentioned “eyes gaze computers” – communication through the eyes.

Mo reminded that care managers do not generally come to residential service reviews.

Ken said that Parkside has written to their member of Parliament about CQC and their paper chase!

Paula would like to know more about transition (school headmaster should be able to help)

Aldershot day services: Bernard was sent a letter from the day service about handling of cash/small amount of money. It did not make much sense to him. Tania will talk to Bernard.

Steve reminded the LIG members that it is for them to decide on how they want to do things in their area.
