COACHES:
TONY HOPPER: graduated from Central City in 1972 and Belmont College in Nashville in 1976; coached Central City gals for 3 years(’77-79); was assistant to Mike West at Daviess County for 3 years(’80-82); took over at Central City for that school’s last 8 years (’83-90); when that became Muhlenberg North, he was the Stars’ coach for their first 5 years (1991-1995). In 1994, Muhlenberg North was a state semi-finalist; in 1995 they went 26-4 and Tony resigned. He was 303-114 in those 13 years as a guys head coach.
GREG BAUGHN: (number 00) was a tough little guard...a 4-year starter...at Apollo; played at Kentucky Wesleyan. Resigned after the 2004 season for health reasons; moved to Murfreesboro, TN where his wife (Jill) was to work at the headquarters of State Farm Insurance. They opened Great Harvest Bread Company on Memorial Blvd. in 2006.
CHUCK BROUGHTON: graduated from Hazel Green H.S. in 1969 (part of Laurel County) and from Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, TN in 1973; coached in the Laurel Co. junior hi system the next year; was promoted to JV coach for 6 years; then head coach for 10...including the state title in ‘82 on Paul Andrews’ miracle shot. His record at Laurel Co. was 241-65. Chuck got fired after the 1990 season...even though Laurel brought back every player for the ‘91 season & the coach’s son, Charley, would have been one of them. Junior averaged 20 ppg his senior year at Apollo in ‘91. Chuck turned 40 in July, 1991. He resigned after the 1999 season.
WILL WYMAN: father is Gunner Wyman, who coached South Hopkins to the state tourney twice in the mid-50’s. Gunner: 3 years South Hopkins; 4 years Tell City; 5 years Hammond High; then Vincenneswhere he won the state championship in 1981, then retired. Career record 526-216. He was a pistol!
Will’s 1st child, a boy, was born with Downs Syndrome & heart troubles in the spring of ‘85.
Will left after the 1990 season to take over Evansville Harrison...and retired in 2007.
One of the nicest guys in the coaching fraternity.
WAYNE CHAPMAN: resigned & was out of coaching in 1979; at Hancock County in 1980; then took over at Kentucky Wesleyan & was very successful there in the ‘80’s.
