Carvers Bay Individual Novel Project

Your task is to present to an audience a clear and concise explanation of a personally selected novel. Each component must be explained in the individual oral presentation. Each student will assemble, display, and give a comprehensive discussion of their selection. Each student will present an oral presentation lasting 5-7 minutes.

Projects are due April 10.

Each student is expected to keep a log while reading your chosen novel. Vocabulary, Ideas, concepts, conflicts, and any other comments should be kept in this log. You will be given a list of questions which must be clearly written out and discussed during your presentation. This must be turned in the day of your presentation.

You will be responsible for the design and presentation of your project. A focus on an attractive and efficient display will be one of your main responsibilities. You will assemble all components in a thematic and artistic fashion.

Required Components:

1) Five essential quotes - These quotes, directly from the source, should highlight some specific aspect of the story line, motivation, and any important aspect of the selected work.

2) Five perfect passages – All passages must come directly from the text. They should be representative of the theme, mood, and tone of the selected book. They should be labeled and identified (content & page number) as such in your presentation.

3) Visual representations - photographs or artistic renditions of:

*Characters – identifying the protagonist/antagonist, dynamic/static, stock

*Setting – noting setting or the changes of location in the plot and time

*Events – at least three main events in the text.

4) Computer component – This may be an interactive, NARRATED PowerPoint presentation, Prezi (PowerPoint of steroids), or Weebly (a web page/design).

5) Artistic representation – This is separate from the visual representations: A main overlaying concept/theme of the exhibit should be explained in your oral presentation. (Examples: oil painting, sculpture, watercolor, pen and ink drawing, etc.)

6) 5 vocabulary words – Selected from the text. This must include definition, page number and line from the text. These words must be displayed prominently in the exhibit.

7) Music – Original composition is always the best evoking the tenor and mood of the work you have chosen (a rap, song, or an original composition). However, you may select something of your choice to play while you present.

8) Repast – OPTIONAL - a snack or food item reminiscent of the novel you have chosen. Students in the past have provided tea and scones when examining a proper English novel. Your creativity in your presentation will be important.

Your presentation must be objective in its range and scope. This is to be considered a scholarly analysis of your novel and will be graded accordingly.

REQUIRED DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1) Explain the title.

2) Who is the author and during what period of time did he/she live?

3) What seems to be the historical time, place and social background of the story?

How is the setting presented? What is the setting in time (hour, season, century, etc.)? What is the setting in place (indoors or out, city or country, land or sea, region, hemisphere, etc.)? Could the story have taken place in any other place or is it crucial to the events therein? Give an example from the text.

4) How much time does the action seem to cover? What is the time frame of the book or play? How long does it take from first to last page? Are there flashbacks? Is there foreshadowing? Does the story jump ahead? Give examples. Do the events progress in a simple orderly fashion or is the author playing with the time sequence for a specific effect? Give examples.

5) If there is more than one plot? Describe and summarize the main plot as distinguished from the sub-plots. Give examples

6) What is the main climax (turning point) in the plot? Identify and state the theme of the story (its controlling idea or central insight). Are there other conflicts that are significant? What is the nature of the conflict (or conflicts)? Are there any complications to the main problem? Show and explain what event makes the climax occur.

7) Identify and explain the importance of the story’s point of view. Who tells the story? Are they good or bad? Name some virtues (good qualities) and vices (bad qualities) of the characters. Give examples from the text.

8) Who is the protagonist of this novel? Identify him/her by name, age, era, locale, social class, family, and occupation. Is the protagonist in this novel flat or round? Illustrate by citing a very brief passage from the novel.

9) Make sure you have discussed Plot, Character, Setting, Point of View, Symbolism, Theme, Style, Tone and any Irony.

10) End your presentation by telling the class what your personal feeling are about your chosen book. Make sure you describe why you feel the way you do and if you would recommend this novel to others. Who would like this book?
