AP English Language and Composition Course Description

AP English Language and Composition is a college level course designed to enhance the effectiveness of student writing while simultaneously developing critical reading skills. Students will explore a variety of nonfiction readings as well as analyze data to determine societal trends.

ACTION STEPS

Through the synthesis of essays, journalism, political writings, biographies, diaries and assigned novels the students will be able to:
• identify the central theme of the writing
• analyze rhetorical strategies used to enhance the effectiveness of the writing
• analyze and expound on detailed evidence to answer assigned prompts
• write a cohesive essay that logically develops the answer to the prompt.

STUDENT RESULTS:

Students will produce one or more of the following writings:

·  Analytical Essay

·  Expository Essay

·  Argumentative Essay

·  Synthesis Essay

·  Journal Keeping- Weekly Reading Journal

HOMEWORK:

Homework will be assigned weekly. Homework is due on its designated date when students arrive to their designated class. If absent homework is due on the day the student returns to school. (Please check sylmarhs.org for class and homework assignments.) Late work is accepted up to two days after due date with substantial point deductions.

·  Reading Logs are due every Friday (Reading Logs for assigned novels)

·  Editorials are due every Thursday

·  Vocabulary is due every other Wednesday

GRADING:

25% of the grade consists of assessments.

25% of the grade consists of class work.

25% of the grade consists of homework and projects.

25% of the grade consists of the final.

A= 90% TO 100%

B= 80% TO 89%

C= 70% TO 79%

D= 60% TO 69%

F= 59% AND BELOW
