Course Description

Tutoring & Study Skills is a class designed to help you be more successful in all of your CORE content areas. We will practice various skills necessary for independence and success. This course offers opportunities for students to receive additional help in their content area classes and additional practice with strategies such as: organization, self-advocacy, note taking, time management, preparing for exams, textbook skills, etc.

Important Note

Please note, tutoring is NOT “JUST a study hall”, this is not the time to do ALL of your homework. You will not be able to do as you please as in an unstructured study hall. Yes, you will receive time to work on homework, but in high school there will often not be enough time to get all homework complete during your tutoring period. Other tasks that will take place in tutoring:

  • Extended time to complete tests
  • Opportunities to receive one-on-one/small group help with content area assignments
  • Assistance with long-term assignments (especially writing assignments and large projects)
  • Skill/Strategy assistance

Course Objectives

The goal of Tutoring & Study Skills is to provide students with tools to allow them to demonstrate academic and personal success by:

  1. Assisting students in the development and clarification of their values, goals, and their ability to effectively cope with transition.
  2. Helping students become aware of their individual learning strengths and needs.
  3. Promoting student ownership and accountability of their academic, personal, and social responsibilities.

Grading

Your grade in tutoring is based on the following:

  1. POD: Problem of the Day – This is daily practice for the upcoming high-stakes testing you will face in high school. Whether it is the AIR, PARCC, OGT, ACT, SAT or the ASVAB, there are several tests that you will see in high school. This practice is designed to help you be more confident and successful.
  2. Participation: You are expected to work during tutoring, this is not play time. Weekly checks will be made to determine how well you are using your time.
  3. Agendas: High School is an important time to learn about self-advocacy and personal responsibility. One of your biggest responsibilities in school will be assignments. Using an agenda is a great tool to keep track of them. These will be checked every Friday.

Policies and Procedures

Mrs. Hurst
Classroom Rules –
  1. RESPECT – this is shown in many ways!
  2. ASK – I can’t read your mind, but if you ask, I WILL help you find the answer
  3. TRY – not trying is NOT a disability

The purpose of tutoring is to assist you in becoming a stronger student. As such, we are working together to help you become an advocate for yourself. I have very high expectations for my students. Yes, I know that school is difficult (and often “boring”) for many of you – but I KNOW you can do it and I will expect as much!

As high school students, it is expected that you build your independence (both academic and social) by becoming an advocate for your own learning. I am here to help you use your strengths to help overcome your weaknesses. I am not here to do your work for you. I want you to become the best you that you can be, but it’s a team effort!

Homework

Students will NOT be able to complete all of their nightly homework in their daily tutoring class. It is not enough time in high school. If you have had success with this in the past, it will harm your grades to keep attempting to do so. You must set aside time AT HOME AFTER SCHOOL to finish homework as well.

Cell Phone Policy

In accordance with Miami East’s adopted Board policy, cell phone use will be strictly prohibited in tutoring. Should students have an emergency, they will be permitted to text or call their parents. Use of the phone within the classroom will result in the following consequences:

1st offense – warning

2nd offense – phone will be placed on teacher desk until the end of the period

3rd offense – phone will be placed on teacher desk until the end of the day

4th offense – detention & phone will be turned into the office

Classroom Consequences

Consequences are used for any disruptive or disrespectful behavior in class. You are old enough to know how to act.

1st offense – Warning

2nd offense – Personal conference with teacher

3rd offense – Detention

4th offense – Administrative/Parent Conference

Teacher Emails

As technology advances, email continues to be the most efficient method of communication between classroom teachers and parents. However, email is considered a public domain (public property) meaning that also has greater access to being intercepted by unintended recipients. Please indicate on the form below if you will allow me to communicate your son/daughter’s school performance with you via email.
