ESSAYS
  1. Beginning at the presynaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction, describe the physical and

biochemical events involved in the contraction of a skeletal muscle fiber. Include the structure of the fiber in your discussion. Due Thurs., 4/4

  1. In humans, discuss the transport of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) by the blood and exchange of

these gases between the blood and cells of the body. Include in your discussion the cellular and fluid composition of the blood. Due Mon., 4/8

  1. Describe the structure and function of the mammalian kidney. Include a discussion of the regulation

of water balance by kidney and hormonal interaction.Due Wed., 4/10

  1. Describe the structure and function of the reflex arc in higher vertebrates. Include a description of the

cell types and a discussion of the mechanism of transmission of the impulse.Due Thurs., 4/11

  1. Discuss the sources and actions of the following pairs of hormones in humans and describe the

feedback mechanisms that control their release:

  1. insulin…glucagon
  2. parathyroid hormone…calcitonin
  3. thyrotropin (TSH)…thyroxineDue Monday, 4/15
  1. Describe the following mechanisms of response to foreign materials in the human body:
  1. the antigen-antibody response to a skin graft from another person
  2. the reactions of the body leading to inflammation of a wound infected by bacteria Due Wed., 4/17
  1. Discuss the processes of cleavage, gastrulation, and neurulation in the frog embryo; tell what each

process accomplishes. Describe an experiment that illustrates the importance of induction in development. Due Friday, 4/19

  1. Structure and function are related in the various organ systems of animals. Select two of the

following four organ systems in vertebrates:

a. respiratory c. excretory

b. digestive d. nervousPossible Test Essay

For each of the two systems, you choose, discuss the structure and function of two adaptations that aid in the transport or exchange of molecules (or ions). Be sure to relate structure to function in each example.

  1. Describe the anatomical and functional similarities and differences within each of the following pairs

of structures: a. artery…vein c. skeletal muscle…cardiac muscle

b. small intestine…colon d. anterior pituitary…posterior pituitary Possible Test Essay

***Each of these essays 1-7 will be worth 10 points. You will receive the full 10 points for each essay you finish and turn in on time, technically, no matter the quality of the essay. (I will read each one carefully and check off from the rubric though, just to give you an idea of how well you answered the question. However, I will have drawn one essay # out of a hat, and will grade that essay in detail. But you will not know which essay I will have chosen. Even though there are 7 essays, it’s great practice to write them, being as they are fairly limited to a particular topic within a particular system.
