ANTI-BULLYING POLICY VICTORIA CHILD MONTESSORI

The Victoria Child Montessori, INC. recognizes that a school that is physically and emotionally safe and secure for all students promotes good citizenship, increase student attendance and participation, and supports academic achievement. To protect the rights of all students for a safe and secure learning environment, the Anti-Bullying Committee prohibits the acts of Bullying, harassment, abuse, and other forms of aggression and violence. The administrator, faculty, staff, parents and students are expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behavior that is respectful and legal.

Bullying refers to “any severe, or repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property.”

Bullying generally takes one of four forms:

(1)Indirectbeing unfriendly, spreading rumors, excluding, tormenting

(2)Physicalunwanted physical contact between the bully and the victim like punching, slapping, kicking, headlocks, pushing, hitting or any form of physical violence

(3)Verbalteasing, threats, and sarcasm which causes damage to victim’s psyche and emotional wellbeing

(4)Cyberany bullying done through the use of technology or any electronic means.

Other forms of bullying are:

(1) Racial Bullying

(2) Gender-based Bullying

(3) Retaliation against to student who reports bullying

Objectives

  1. All teaching and non-teaching personnel, pupils and parents should have an understanding of what bullying is
  2. All teaching and non-teaching personnel, pupils and parents should know the policy and cooperate
  3. Respond promptly and effectively a bullying case.

Implementation

Schools

The following steps may be taken when dealing with incident:

  • If bullying is suspected or reported, the incident will be dealt immediately by the staff or personnel who have been approached.
  • A clear and precise account of the incident will be recorded and given to the Chairperson of Anti-bullying Committee.
  • The Chairperson will interview all concerned and will record the incident
  • Parents will be kept informed.
  • Punitive measures will be used as appropriate and in consultation with all parties concerned.

Pupils

Pupils who have been bullied will be supported by:

  • Offering an immediate opportunity to discuss the experience with an adviser or any member of Anti-bullying committee
  • Reassuring the pupil
  • Offering continuous support
  • Restoring self-esteem and confidence

Pupils who have bullied will be helped by:

  • Discussing what happened
  • Discovering why the pupil became involved
  • Pointing out the wrong doing and the need to change
  • Informing parents or guardians to help change the attitude and behavior of the child

The following disciplinary actions can be taken

  • Offense warning
  • Minor Fixed-term exclusion
  • Major Fixed-term exclusion

Monitoring, evaluation and review

The school will review this policy annually and assess its implementation and effectiveness. The policy will be promoted and implemented throughout the school.
