ANNUAL SHOW
It didn’t rain!! Yes it was a bit windy but not as bad as the day before – when we were trying to build jumps! We decided the only answer was to make more good use of the pile of sand and fill about 80 sandbags to weight every wing. This certainly worked and it meant the courses could be set ready for the next day without us having to redo them in the morning. It was an early start to the day getting the ropes and secretary’s tent up as it could not be done in the previous days wind. A queue was soon forming as people wanted to get their entries in – well done to Diana, Gill and Carol for keeping it all under control. Classes generally started on time and everything appeared to run smoothly. However, please read the article below as there were some very close shaves. A Big Thank You must go to the Judges, without them so generously giving up their time we could not run a show, to the stewards, whom without it would be chaos, Chris on the gate, he didn’t get a lot of rest, Matt for providing First Aid and also to all you competitors who were polite and patient. We would also like to mention our sponsors, Westons of Sway, Countrywide of Totton, Norris’s of Beaulieu and New Forest Quality Haylage who all generously donated prizes which brought even bigger smiles to the faces of the winners. TAIL RIBBONS AND SHOW / EVENT ETIQUETTE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
Ribbons in a horse’s tail are there for a reason, NOT to just look pretty (a comment overheard). Therefore if you see a horse with any ribbons in its tail then give it a VERY wide berth. However, one of the first things you should have learnt with horses was to keep away from their back legs and this should NEVER be forgotten especially at shows where the animals are very likely to be stressed, excited, young, inexperienced etc and so act unpredictably – whether they have ribbons or not. Don’t presume that just because it is being ridden by a child that it won’t kick, panic etc - it would be lovely if they were all laid back and sweet natured but we know that is being unrealistic. If these following few guidelines were adhered to at any horse event then it might make the showground a much safer place. Many of the below are relevant whether on horseback or on foot.
1 If you know that your horse may possibly kick then put a red ribbon in its tail and keep away from the crowded areas until you are really needed. Warn others if need be. This also covers you should he kick out – you have warned them!
2 Never go close behind ANY horses even if they are stood quietly – it doesn’t mean they will not suddenly kick out.
Remember in summer horses can suddenly lash out if they get a fly.
3 If a horse is stood away from the crowd this is probably because it NEEDS space so keep away.
4 If you see a horse misbehaving don’t walk past close by – give it plenty of space.
5 Allow all horses their own space. Many often feel uncomfortable when surrounded by to many horses.
6 There should be NO trotting or cantering anywhere on the showground other than in the designated warm up areas or ring. If you have to hurry to get to a ring only trot if there are no others around – better to be late and safe.
7 Make sure any children are taught the ribbon colours and given all this information.
8 Make sure anyone accompanying you knows this info to help keep them safe.
Most of this info is also relevant at any of our events. Even at the forest events you should not trot up behind or canter past other horses – you don’t know how they are going to react and could cause problems. Always slow down and give any horse a wide berth. Many of our members bring youngsters to events to learn – they have to start somewhere!
The ribbon colours may vary so this is what they mean
RED – I kick. BLUE – I am a stallion. GREEN – I am young and inexperienced, WHITE – I am for sale.
