Annual Report—Regional Retirement Association Ad Hoc Committee Chair-June ’08-09

I During July continued duties as Treasurer of RAPS. . Maintained contact with UWRA planning spring meeting. Larry Sawyer attended AROHE. I was unable to attend. In November I missed the board meeting as I had to attend to personal business in Yakima, WA. During January, 2009 board okayed proposal to develop a RAPS Scholarship Committee. Members were Dave Krug, Mike Fiasca, Larry Sawyer and Robert Vogelsang. Larry and Dianne Sawyer hosted a dinner for Dr. Robert and Mrs. Fuller from the University of Nebraska Retirement Association. A number of us board members members attended. The next morning Dr. Fuller was hosted for a tour by the Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Larry and Dianne Sawyer. I also attended. Larry and I went to lunch with him at University Place. He stated that he had learned a great deal from us for the continured development of their retirement association. In February MiMi responded to an inquiry from the office manager of the Boise State University Retirement Association. Amy Valdez’s mother told me Amy gave the manager our e-mail address. MiMi gave her much information about our association. I also filled her in on our group and the NW associations and our consortium. During that time I was able to get in touch with the president of Western Oregon University Retirement Association, the Southern Oregon University Retirement Association and the new president of the Oregon State University Retirement Association. I informed them of the upcoming conference at UWRA. I forwarded the information to the UW association. Continuing during January and February the RAPS Scholarship Committee e-mailed one another and developed guidelines for the scholarship, then we met and agreed on the final guidelines. (During February I forgot to report some major volunteer activity: My fellow puppeteer Ken Stenehjem from Yakima and I presented a puppet workshop for Beryl & Vic’s daughter’s SE elementary school. Four classes in the morning and four classes in the afternoon. The next day we did another workshop for middle school students for Dorothy Sermol’s daughter in the TigardSchool District for one hundred students.) In March (I think) the Sawyers hosted a potluck for the RAPS hikers at their home. With our March board meeting the Scholarship Committee presented our guidelines for the proposed scholarship. The board suggested minor editing. We developed the following:

1.The recipient many be a junior, senior or graduate student.

2. Emphasis in gerontology and/or health related studies.

3. Selected by the department chair.

4. Initially should not be endowed.

5..Award a scholarship when we have appropriate funds.

We also have to receive permission from the Foundation to initiate the scholarship.

In April President Wiewel hosted the Spring Luncheon for retired faculty and staff. We announced the development of the RAPS scholarship. When the School of Fine and Performing Arts announced the spring opera, I tried to arrange a RAPS reception for our night at the opera. I was unsuccessful. Three guests accompanied me to the opera on Friday evening. A number of RAPS members were in the audience. At the end of April Vic and Beryl Dahl attended the UWRA Spring Luncheon and then the conference as our delegates. Bruce Stern and I were unable to attend. In May the Alpenrose Dariy hosted our Ice Cream Social. Vic Dahl was our most interesting speaker about FortVancouver. I helped set up, serve and clean up.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert W. Vogelsang
