Historica Fairs
Program Grant
Available to Your School
Submit your Letter of Intent by January 19, 2007
In May 2003, Historica and British Columbia’s First Nations Schools Association (FNSA) committed their combined resources to providing First Nations and public schools with the opportunity to explore and share their unique histories.
The primary objective of this partnership is to increase BC involvement in the Historica Fairs Program, a hands-on approach to making learning about history and heritage fun. It is our goal to make the Fairs experience available to the 130 BC First Nations schools and to promote partnerships with local provincial schools.
Historica is continuing its work with the FNSA to make the Historica Fairs Program available to First Nations schools. The partnership with Historica is based on the benefits of the Historica Fairs program, and how they fit with current strategies undertaken by FNESC and the FNSA, such as Anti-Racism, School to School Transition, and Joint Professional Development for provincial and First Nations school staff. Funding in the amount of $750.00 per community is available for up to 25 First Nation schools along with a neighbouring provincial school to participate in and jointly develop a Community Historica Fair.
Along with the grant to set up the Community Historica Fair, the FNSA and Historica will make every effort to provide joint professional development for the provincial and First Nation schools participating in the Fairs Program for the first time. The professional development is to help the teachers and school staff in integrating the Historica Fair project into grades 4-9 curriculum. Further details of the professional development and Historica Fairs Program are attached, for your information.
Schools may use their Historica Fairs grant for the following purpose(s):
- Project materials for the students
- Recognition awards for the Community Historica Fair
- Extra material costs associated with the Historica Fair
- Student transportation
It is a requirement for this program that both a First Nation school and a provincial school participate in the Community Historica Fair. In allocating the money consideration will be given to ensure equitable regional distribution. The funding is to be shared amongst the two participating schools (First Nation and ProvincialSchool). Once a letter of intent has been received and the professional development has been confirmed (if required), a letter of agreement for the funding will be signed. The deadline for submitting letters of intent is January 19, 2007. The template for that letter of intent is attached.
Schools that receive the Historica Fairs grant are required to provide a Final Report at the completion of their Fair. The FNSA will send the reporting form to both participating schools. The due date for the Final Report is June 15, 2007. To celebrate the success of these Fairs please submit photos, videos, samples or other material that will showcase your Fair. Please note these may be published and require the appropriate permission forms to accompany the submissions. A template of this Final Report is also attached and will be available online at or
In addition to the $750.00 grant available to communities, there will be $250.00 available to schools that would like to participate in Regional Fairs. This funding is intended for transportation costs only. Information for participating in Regional Historica Fairs will be sent out to schools once they have submitted a Letter of Intent.
Please feel free to contact me at , 604-925-6087 or Becky Burns, Historica Fairs Manager at , at any time if you have any questions about this initiative.
Yours Sincerely,
Jan Haugen
