Travel Back in TimeWax Museum!

On Thursday, May 29th, all sixth grade students will participate in a “Travel Back in Time Wax Museum”. When a student is not performing, he/she will be a “time-traveler”.

As a performer, students will need to research and prepare an animated version of a selected historical figure from our World History Curriculum. Attached you will find a list of possible figures. Suggested sources include (but are not limited to), Wilson Biography, Britannica Online, Student Resource Center, NetTrekker, Biography.com, library resource materials, biographies, encyclopedias and the social studies textbook. Students will have at least two days in the library to research. It is necessary that students supplement research at home, either online or with printed material. Books from our LMC may be checked out overnight.

After completing the research, students will memorize top ten important facts, including birth and death, createa staged presentation which will include a backdrop, props, and costume. Students then will “become”a legendary person – giving facts about the life, civilization, and events of this historical figure. Construction paper etc. will be available here at school. All other materials must be brought from home.Students will also need to practice stating each fact with a mechanical-animatronic movement.

We will have a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, the 28th and set up the museums on Thursday morning. Therefore, all props and backdrops must be complete preferably by Wednesday. Students will be assigned a time to perform once this project is underway and an invitation will be sent home accordingly.

On the museum day, students will take two roles: as both a presenter and a time-traveler. As a presenter, students will beginasleep, while time-travelers (other students and parents) arrive to hear the historical contribution! Time travelers will press a button (sticker on presenter’s hand) to hearfascinating facts about the famous person students have become. This will “trigger” a response from the student:as theywake up and state name and selected facts. Then they will go back to sleep only to wake up again when the button has been pressed once more by new time-travelers. All decorated stations will border the classroom and will include the historical name, civilization, time period, facts, backdrop, andother pertinent artifacts (props).

As a visitor to a museum, students are expected to respect each figure as they quietly move to each station. Students will have a passport as they travel from one to the next in order to record fascinating facts and to collect a sticker or stamp to verify their travel. As a historical figure, students are expected to stay in character and know all facts, as they creatively become thefigure. Student’s final grade will includeall of the above mentioned requirements in addition to their ability to be respectful and sincere. Costumes, props, and backgrounds are required.

Learning will come alive, as sixth graders become the historyof the ancient world and beyond. We are excited to witness the creativity and commitment to learning! Good luck!
