Animal Research Report, Poster and Presentation

W.3.2 Write informative /explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

W.3.2b Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details.

W.3.2.c Use linking words and phrases to connect ideas with categories of information.

W.3.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.

SL.3.4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts, and relevant descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

What is your favorite animal? Now is your chance to learn specific information about your favorite animal AND teach these facts to the class!

Students will need to research an animal, and write a narrative (NOT just a list) describing the following characteristics. EACH characteristic and its accompanying description has a point value, so omitting any will result in the loss of points. Students must include information about the following characteristics:cold or warm blooded, vertebrate or invertebrate, body design (physical description with adjectives relating to size, weight, color, patterns or other distinguishing features), habitat (specific country, region, or area), reproduction (eggs or live birth), diet (carnivore/herbivore/omnivore and WHAT SPECIFICALLY the animal eats), and adaptations for survival: behavioral (migration, hibernation, or estivation) , physical (camouflage, webbed feet, tooth shape, etc.), or both.

In addition to a narrative, students will need to prepare a visual (poster board, slide show, etc.) AND present this to the class. Due to the complexity of this project, it will be due the Friday that we are back after break (10/14). Students that are going away for break can work on it before they go (and when they return), and those that will be home over the break, can use the time to work on the project. Because they will be presenting to the class, they should also prepare notecards of what they want to say/ teach to the class, and allow sufficient time to practice AT HOME with their grown up, so they are prepared to give their presentations. ALL components of this project (the essay, the visual, and the oral presentation) will be graded according to a rubric that will be sent home by this Friday (Sept. 23rd). Please use the rubric as a checklist to ensure your child’s project includes all of the required parts, and that they are adequately prepared to present to the class. They will need to be able to read the information from their notecards fluently, so please help them by practicing with them.

Math

Due Friday, Sept. 23

3.OA.8Solve two-step word problems, using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies, including rounding.

Solve the story problems on a separate piece of paper. Show all of your work/strategies. Write a mathematical expression that shows how you solved each problem.

  1. Jennifer’s family is going to the zoo to see their favorite animals. There will be three grown-ups because Jennifer’s grandmother is also coming along, and four children. Adult tickets cost $12.00 each, and children’s tickets cost $8.00 each. How much willzoo admission tickets cost?
  2. Jennifer’s grandmother pays for the tickets with a ten-dollar bill and a fifty-dollar bill. Did she have too little, too much, or just the right amount of money? How much more does she need or does she get any change back?
  3. It takes one hour and 15 minutes to get to the zoo. If the family leaves the house at 8:30 in the morning, what time will they arrive at the zoo? If they spend 5 hours and 35 minutes at the zoo, what time will they leave the zoo? BONUS: what time will they get home?
  4. Before they leave, they stop by the gift shop for souvenirs. Two children want a stuffed animal, one wants a t-shirt, and one would like a poster and a bracelet. Using the price list, figure out how much these gifts will cost in all.
