Lord of the Flies Journal Project

Choose one character from Lord of the Flies that you relate to the most, or that you really like, or even that gets on your nerves. Think about that character: What motivates him? What influences him? What influence does he have on the other character?

For this project you will create a journal from the perspective/point of view of ONE Lord of the Flies character. You will comment, react and reflect on the events in the book as you continue to read.

REQUIREMENTS:

1 creative cover page (10 points)

  • Represents the character by using symbols and decorations that fit the character’s personality
  • Includes the NAME of the CHARACTER on the cover

1introduction (10 points)

  • Writing as yourself, explain why you chose that character.
  • Typed, ½-1 page, double-spaced, Arial or Times font
  • Put YOUR NAME on this page of the journal.

5 typed journals (20 points each)

  • Write ½ - 1 page each, double-spaced, 12 point Arial or Times font.
  • Write in 1st person, as if you were that character.
  • Write whenever something strikes you as significant in that character’s life.
  • Note anything that strikes you as interesting, upsetting, frustrating, revealing, exciting, etc. It might become a good journal topic.
  • Be sure to use examples/information from the novel to enhance your journals.
  • While you might be responding to something specific in the novel, you can add in, “create” and infer what your character would think, say, do, etc., based on his/her personality.

OVER

Here are some journal ideas:

  • Respond to something your character does-what did you do? Why did you do it? How do you feel about what you did? What will the consequences be? Who was affected?
  • Respond/react to something that happens directly to your character.
  • Have you been betrayed by another character? Who was it? What happened? What are your feelings towards that character now?
  • To whom do you feel the closest on the island and why?
  • How is your life on the island better/worse than it was back in England? At school?
  • What were your hopes when you first arrived on the island, and how have they changed since then?
  • Are you keeping a secret? What is it? From whom are you hiding it, and why? What could happen if it is revealed?
  • Write about something you regret.
  • What was the most exciting day/event for you since being on the island?
  • Do you wish your were closer to someone on the island? Who? Why?
  • What is your greatest accomplishment? What are you the most proud of?

The above are only ideas. If you have a better idea, feel free to be creative!

I will not be assigning the individual journals on specific days. It is up to you be working on them over the next week. PLEASE do not wait until the last minute to begin this project.
