Animal Control Officer
Stipend: $232 monthly, paid at $116 Biweekly increments
Hours: Part time on-call position
Nature of Work:
- An Animal Control Officer enforces local and regional laws concerning the care and treatment of animals.
- Patrol public areas looking for potential signs of distressed animals and work directly with Andover community concerning animal control issues.
- Enforcing animal licensing laws and humane care regulations.
- Responsible for capturing and impounding dangerous or reported stray animals.
- Investigate cases and claims of animal cruelty.
- Writing/filing incident reports.
- Respond to complaints of roaming, sick, injured, lost, found, noisy, barking, biting, vicious, and dead domestic animals or specified dangerous wildlife.
Job Functions:
- Interact frequently with members of the public.
- Remove abused or neglected animals from negligent owner’s custody.
- Be on call for emergency situations which may fall outside of normal business hours.
- Take appropriate safety precautions when working with unfamiliar and unpredictable animals.
- Dog licensing, send out quarantine notices, issue summonses for violations, prepare monthly reports for the State of Connecticut, prepare annual reports of activities for the town of Andover.
- Arrange medical attention for injured or sick animals.
- Enforce laws and ordinances regarding domestic animals and required inoculations.
- Contact the Department of Environmental Protection regarding bears and other wild animal issues.
- Receive calls related to possible rabid, sick or injured animals, assess situations and take appropriate measures to quarantine and/or test animals and alert appropriate state agencies about the outcomes of the reports.
- Appear in court when presence is required for animal related matters.
- Coordinate the care of impounded animals.
- Meet with town administrator or his designee to discuss activity.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- At least 21 years of Age
- United States citizen.
- Have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- ACO must have their own reliable source of transportation and a working cellular phone.
- Appropriate certification and ACO Training within one year of hire.
- One year grace period
- Must attend the first available Animal Control Academy
- 96 hour class, 2 days a week for 6 weeks, Oral Board 70% passing
- After obtaining certification there are 6-hour per year continuing education requirements.
- Considerable knowledge, skill, and ability in animal care/handling and dealing with the public in a courteous manner.
- Considerable working knowledge of state and local animal control laws.
- Ability to write reports and keep records
