Text: Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology 4th edition

Published by Pearson Education, Inc.

Other Materials: LOTS OF PAPER, one-inch 3 ring binder (recommended)

Description: The study of the human body is presented in a manner to make the structures and functions of the systems stimulating and meaningful. This coarse provides an analysis of the various organ systems, and how they work together to produce a coordinate smooth-working entity in health. Laboratory techniques are stressed with the dissection of a mammal. Human anatomy & physiology may be taken as an elective course.

Prerequisites: Passing biology with a “B” (85%) or better.

Goals:1. To help students understand how the structure of an organ and/or supporting

tissue supports the underlying function(s).

  1. To help the student understand and use medical terminology.
  2. To provide a knowledge base for students interested in pursuing a career in the health/medical field.

Instructional Philosophy: Students are required to come to class prepared to learn. Note taking skills are necessary to be successful in this class. Students are required to participate in classroom discussion and work cooperatively to complete some assignments. In addition to classroom assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests, students are required to complete several projects, a mammal dissection and a writing assignment. Students who are willing to be actively involved in their learning will be successful in Human Anatomy & Physiology.

Evaluations: Students will be assessed on a points system. Each assignment will be given a point value based upon the complexity and length of the assignments. Assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following: classroom assignments, homework, labs, projects, quizzes, and test.

Grades: The grading scale below, which was established by the Campbell County Board of Education, will be used:

100 – 93% / A
92-85% / B
84-73% / C
72-65% / D
64- 0% / F

Absences and Late work: The best time to get your “make up” work is during class when everyone is working on the assignment for the day. Students with excused absences need to turn in assignments that are missed during their absences within the time allotted by the CCHS attendance policy. Students with unexcused absences may complete missed assignments, but not for a point value. Students will be given one late assignment per quarter. This late assignment is for classroom assignments or homework. It can not be used for testes or quizzes. Late work will not be accepted (unless it is do to an excused absence or it is begin used as a late assignment).

Extra credit: Extra credit is offered throughout the school year. However, it is only offered to students who have completed their “regular credit” (i.e. classroom and/or homework assignments). Extra credit is given for (but not limited to) the following: making flashcards (each card is worth ½ a point) and helping out in the lab or the classroom, Students may only earn up to 20 points extra credit per quarter.

Test “retake” policy: Any student receiving a 75% or lower score on a chapter or unit test has the opportunity to retake that test. However, the take must be taken by the student within one week of the original test date.

Behavior expectations: Students and Ms. Peters are expected to follow all directions, be prepared, be organized and most importantly, be respectful of others and their property. Students who choose not to follow the classroom expectations or the CCS discipline code will have to “suffer the consequences” of their choice.
