Amanda N. Sonnet XLV-Pablo Neruda

The author and narrator of this poem, Pablo Neruda, is a very flat character. The only details that are given to the audience about Neruda as a person are his emotions and thoughts. For example, in the sentence “…I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep,” Neruda uses a simile to compare his sadness to the thought of waiting on someone that will never return. Although he is describing his feelings of losing loved one, he does not describe how he copes with this loss or why he feels he is losing her. Neruda bluntly tells the audience what he desires with the phrases “don’t go far” and “don’t leave me,” but never describes why he feels he is losing the love of his life. He will obviously be devastated if his love was to ever leave him for good because he ends the sonnet with the phrase” will you leave me here, dying,” but still gives no clue as to why he feels the consequences of his “dearest’s” loss are so drastic. The sonnet also does not give a slightest hint as to the appearance of Pablo Neruda or a detail of his style or “look.” Neruda is a very vague character made up of only thoughts and emotions.

Gaspar A. “Sonnet XLV” - Pablo Neruda

“Will you leave me here, dying?” in this story, the protagonist emphasizes his weakness, which is his complete dependency on this other person. He makes it evident that he is not able to do anything without him/her.”… chocking my lost heart.” His self awareness and self confident is absent in his character; he completely relies on this person for survival. “I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station.” The author portrays this other person almost as a part of the protagonist, and speaks about all the pain of separation. He not only expresses dependency towards the other, but also devotion and dedication to be with him/her. “I'll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back?” With his overall lack of self awareness and his blindness towards the situation, the protagonist is basically controlled by this other person.
