The Wallace’s also wrote an extensive report which points out things which need to be followed up as follows: / In a follow up visit to establish the current situation of the project, the Director Community Service had a meeting wit some members of the RCC and below is a summary of the discussion on each item
Water at Kanapa primary school;
Borehole. The bore hole had been broken for over a year the village had to contribute for repair UGX 100,000 and D5330 paid 200,000.
Kanapa primary school – water harvest;
2 tanks were built at the school .The above ground tank of 18000 litres and the above ground of 50,000 litres .The gutters and valves weredamaged affecting supply of water
The community discussed the damages and accepted to take responsibility / In order to create a sense of responsibility assign will be posted “you spoil you repair”. Vicky and Steve discussed with Sam Mutono to talk to the contractor about the poor quality of the pipes and what remedies can be undertaken.
The kids will also be sensitised to take responsibility for any damage / RCKW decided to take up the repairs themselves as the Contractor has not been responsive. Bernadette has identified two people to carry out the repairs; they visited Oduoro Kanapa on 30th Jan and made a quotation for the job both at Kanapa and TotolimPrimary schools, this will be discussed by Service committee after Fellowship on 6th Feb.
It is hoped that the work will be done before end of Feb.
Shared Tank:
In order to discourage the sharing of water source between community and the schools, The communities will get shared water tanks. / Sharing of water tank is a new concept and women would be encouraged to take responsibility and also tie it to “kitchen garden” / RCC
Totolim Primary school water harvest. The damage to the water harvest system and school property was more extensive
It was suggested that every adult would pay 1000 for repairs It was agreed to keep cows out of the school premises in all the schools, Any cow found in the premises would be taken to the sub-county headquarters and a fine of 10,000 would be paid to get the cow back. / The community agreed to take responsibility / The community has collected UGX300 000

Bio-sand filters-
One of the original recipients of bio sand filter gave a testimony how nobody in his family has had a case of Typhoid and the general health of the family had improved.However23 bio sand filters were laying around Kanapa primary school,2 were broken
Apparently the village used their own resources and initiative to make extra cases but could not get the sand / They have to find resources for sand / The community will need some help for the sand and Francis to send,they had already inquired about the cost of the san but have not raised the funds. RCC to share with RCKW the budget.
RCC
Training for water repair
It had earlier been agreed that it was necessary for someone to be trained to repair boreholes to avoid depending on outsiders, this had been overlooked / It was agreed that Sam should explore and find 2 people who can be trained including maintenance issues and consideration will be given for provision of tools and basic set of parts / The meeting agreed that the community will ask
Who will be drilling the eight new boreholes to train the two people who will repair and maintain boreholes.
RCC/Sam Mutono
Future;
Boreholes: The village has requested for 8 new boreholes.
E-Plus Engineering services have been requested to drill the 8 wells+1 free which will be located atKanapa primary school. / Sam Mutono to check out E-plus Engineering Services to see if he is approves / The RCC has requested/begged /urged that E-Plus Engineers be given the the job to drill the 8 new boreholes +one free to be located at Kanapa PS. They promised to supervise the workand ensure that the company would garentee to repair maintain for at least 3 years

Sanitation
Latrines/changing rooms for girls
Current banks of latrines in both Totolim Primary School and Kanapa Primary School are not sufficient, it was suggested to add 1 bank of 5 stalls and 2 changing rooms in Totolim primary School and hand wash stations.
In Kanapa Primary School, it is recommended that the boys latrine bank which is nearly full be demolished and pits filled in, and 4 of the girl’s stalls be given to the boys. Then Construct a new latrine with 8 stalls for boys and 4 be given to girls and add hand washing stations / A drawing and quotation has been asked from Sam for latrines and changing rooms. The local brick makers and community members will construct the latrines at both Totolim and Kanapa Primary Schools. / Bernadette to liaise with Sam M to find the drawing for the pit latrines.
Sam Mutono/Bernadette
Sand plats and latrines.
Sand plats had been damaged because the village did not understand what they were getting.Sand plats were broken and of poor quality / It was agreed that broken sand plats be replaced and villagers held accountable but there is also need for education when items are delivered. / The members of RCC present said that holes in the sand plats delivered were too small and the Sand plats were of inferior quality due to less cement used. Where are these moulded If sand plats are not given, are latrines not dug?

Income generating activities:
Animals.
Goats-it was agreed that the village will be supplied with 1Bily goat and 2 she goats
The first litters from each she goat will be passed on to another family and the subsequent litters be kept by owner. The hybrid Billy may also be used to service other she goats to have mixed offspring.
The Billy Hybrid is about 150,000 while local she goats are shs.100,000-120,000.The hybrid grows faster
The request is for 3-4 sets of goats to be given as a test / This recommendation awaits approval from D5330 / The RCC members present suggested that it would be better if 4 Billy goats were given, one per village,to service the local she goats and raise their value. It may not be necessary to have the exotic she goats.
Steve and Vicky to follow up.
Kroila chicken; Is a fast growing chicken that lays 300 eggs per year Sam Mutono has already received 50 for test / Sam to facilitate this project so that the villagers can be availed with this breed of chickens / Bernadette had contacted and booked for 200 chicks by Dec. 2012 from Entebbe where the chickens are being received from source. However most of the chicks died; Sam M confirmed this. We have been told to wait for 2-3 months as they try to hatch them in country.
Sam Mutono/Bernadette
Farming and forestry- several farmers had been supplied with orange trees but many have been infected by bacteria while others had dried up- those trees which are doing well have grown up to btn 4-6 feet tall and bearing fruit need trimming
One man who received first batch has seen benefits and purchased 100 more orange trees.
There is a privately owned farm which grows a variety of fruits and vegetables including matoke and maize which is within easy reach of the project villages and has agreed to sell seedlings and train the farmers. / One more round of seedling s will be distributed and villagers urged to irrigate and ensure that the trees are looked after well
Serere Agriculture Seed improvement and extension group will be requested to train and support farmers particularly as it will be in the local language / The meeting discussed how agriculture can be scaled-up; it was pointed that the communities lack the means to open up more land. It was suggested thatthere in need for eithr ox-poughs or appropriate tractors, like even walking tracktors. Bernadette had earlier investigated and had identified a very economical tractors that uses 3ltres to plough an acre in 3 hours which would be affordable by farmers who would meet the cost of fuel, provide lunch for the driver and contribute some money for maintenance.
Vicky/Steve to consider these options in connection with expansion of agriculture.
Vicky/Steve RCKW
Silk oak trees. Everyone is excited about growing trees for fuel and would like to start as soon as possible
They also inquired if silk oak will provide timber. Bernadette also suggested candlenut trees which would provide income in 4 years as seeds are used for bio fuel . / Vicky to check silk oak for timber
Bernadette to bring candlenut tree promoters to the Project site. / Vicky to look into silk Oak trees while Bernadette sends facilitator for candle nut tree growing.
Kitchen garden.
RCC Member Grace to gather 10 women to agree to have vegetable gardens behind their kitchens and protect them against goats and chicken.
Bernadette will also introduce mushroom to these women if they can build a small house for this purpose. / Bernadette to go to Ouduoro Kanapa to discuss the kitchen gardens and mushroom growing October/November / Bernadette returned to Oduoro Kanapa on 24-25 Jan with the mushroom expert and planted mushroomwith the women of Oduoro,Kanapa, Totolim and Obatya. The kichen gardens will flourish with the rains
A facilitator-Karl suggested that it would be necessary to have someone to follow up on the identified programmes with RCC and the villagers. / A suitable individual to be identified preferably someone who has been working with the RCC / RCKW had decided to appoint Esther Amongini as project coordinator. Esther has on several occasions acted as translator for Vicky/Steve/RCKW when they visited the project,she knows the project well. Bernadette took the opportunity to introduce her to thr RCC who were pleased with the move. Her TOR is ready and she should get her appointment letter from the President and go and start her work this week. (seeTOR)

Beehives and stands;
Great progress with ready market at the hospital and within the community. But the problem of termites and rats that eat bees when rats invade the hives the colony leaves; black ants and termites also eat the hives.
NAADS provided metal stands with legs greased to solve the problem. Bee keepers requested for metal stands. It was suggested that they make a contribution of Shs 5000 towards the cost.
The approximate cost from Bena General Agencies is about USD1211.00 (See earlier quote) / when all farmers have committed their share of the cost of metal stands USD 5330 will provide the difference / The meeting agreed that the owners of beehives can afford the metal stands and should provide for themselves. But they reminded that at the beginning there were other equipments for honey harvesting and protective gears which were to be provided, RCKW/D5330 requested to look into it.
Bee-keeping is one area where success has been registered, is it possible to expand this opportunity and give more people a chnce?
Bernadette/Sam M
Education;
Primary.
It was suggested that2-3 very bright and promising Pupils from P2 be placed in P1 in a private school from both Totolim and Kanapa .One Pupil Ilakot Agnes has been recommended from Totolim. / Bernadette suggests that all theclasses from Totolim and Ouduoro -Kanapa be provided with text books. This will motivate teachers to teach well, open up competition between the 3 schools Kanapa, Totolim and the Private school. To see who produces more firs t, second or good third grades and less failures
This should be discussed
further in January Bernadette will establish the cost of 100 books per subject per class or even 50 of each to be shared / Names of pupils to benefit from the suggested placement in boarding schools were forwarded to Vicky by Francis and Bernadette
The standard f education can be improved in the two schools if they can be provided with text books for teaches and pupils.
Kanapa primary school too many pupils per class room i.e. 170 pupils in P1 class room / There are programmes of Gov’t/NGO’s that sponsor additional classrooms like Plan Uganda.RCKW Should explore with Plan Uganda and local Gov’t / Esther to follow up on this with Local Government and NGOs like Plan International
VOCATIONAL SCHOOL;
Lords Mead Vocational School
There are 10 students at Lords Meade. 5 in 1st year, 3 in Second year and 2 in 3rd year.
Need for books; Eachstudent will be given Math and English books but for other texts, Eachwill be shared by 2 Students per book.
There is also need to explore what the students willdo after 4 years which is an equivalent of O level. Lords Mead says it can provide two more years which will be an equivalent of A Level after which they could go to Nile vocational Academy in Jinja or any other Higher Vocational Institutions / Headmaster Raymond to S4 students, Books need to be purchased. / HM Raymond
Sam
Adult Education;
The villagers in Ouduoro Kanapa are interested in Adult education. They need to write apropos al identifying location, number of teachers, compensation for teachers and their expectations / A proposal needs to be written by the villagers / The proposal seems to be too ambitious. Needs further discussion
RCC Teacher’s representative
SOLAR;-Lights
Batteries and lights are donated by Totally Wired.Inc. And each family got one unit for one hut but as homesteads consist of several huts, it may be helpful for families to pay something for extra solar lights to cover other huts i.e. chicken etc.
Cooking Unit:-
Bernadette was left with a solar cooking unit she tried it but because this season the sun is no too strong and only last a short time, the beans were only partially cooked / Extra solar lights to be sold to the community Bernadette would like to suggest fabrication of the cooking unit with a more stable aluminium material before introducing to community.
Recommended that a couple should be built for testing. She will explore / Vicky
Bernadette
Rocket stove ; Rocket stove would use less firewood and it will be tied to growing silk oak trees / It could still be helpful if introduced earlier / Vicky
Brick makers;
3 brick makers were trained but have up to now failed to find employment or to employ themselves
But can be used to make bricks for houses and latrines for the project / RCC to remind brick makers to find their own work
Micro loans;
It seems people who were loaned funds used them for school fees and have failed to pay back as they did not put them in income generating activities / It was agreed that RCC to talk to borrowers to inform them that they must refund the money by Jan 2013. Otherwise the equivalent property will be confiscated from them i.e. chicken, goat etc.
By Jan 2013 RCC has to either return the money given to them and discontinue the programme, Or
Begin to loan the funds again but not for school fees
A different programme is being developed to help with school fees / RCC
RCC promised to take it up with the people who who ha borrwed
D5330
Motor bikes and carts;
Bikes and carts issue is on hold; The current operating motorbike in use has not broken down it appears to be well taken care of
Carts- Agreement reached with RCC to purchase 5 carts @Shs 1.107,000, can be shared it is not clear if oxen will also be purchased.
RCC also requested consideration of custom motorcycle with freight bed attached for use in the village .This was agreed to be a good idea / Ox carts will be purchased later and if it proves successful, more will be purchased. Motorcycle with freight bed to be purchased / The motorbike cart was delivered on 255th Jan.2013
Ukulele’s;
Books bought for reading but not being used / If by Jan they have not been used they will be donated to another school / RCC Teacher’s representative
Health;
Mosquito nets,
Need for more nets, the last time although 1000 were expected, when they arrived, they were less; RCC was informed that funds were available for more nets. They should ascertain the exact no of nets still needed
Dependency- the villagers had not internalised the fact that the support they are given is to set them up so that they can do things for and by themselves ,During the various meetings held between Steve and Vicky the members of RCKW and the villagers several examples were given to them on how they are expected to carry on taking better care of boreholes and water harvesting equipment at the schools, In future if they want clean water, They will have to ensure that tanks and boreholes are taken better care of. As well as school compounds / Need to be informed about number of people who still need nets for funds to be sent / Sam Mutono
