NAME: ______

DIRECTIONS: in your focus groups, answer the questions that correlate with your focus (see the bolded words after each question). For some questions, many groups will be answering through the LENS of their FOCUS. See the example below, which shows how ONE question can be answered three slightly different ways.

AN EXAMPLE OF ANSWERING QUESTIONS THROUGH THE LENS OF YOUR FOCUS:

Why might being divergent in this society be considered dangerous?

CHOICE: If you are divergent, you have to choose your own destiny – or be factionless, which is basically being a homeless lepper. When people have the option to choose where to go, they might not truly fit in which could cause chaos in this perfectly planned society.

IDENTITY/BELONGING: It is obviously important to belong to a faction in this society and to be divergent means that you are an outlier who does not belong. This could mean that you pose a potential threat because the leaders of this society place a lot of emphasis on belonging as seen through the aptitude test, intense choosing ceremony, and treatment of those who are “factionless” or do not belong.

FEAR: It seems like people fear being divergent and fear knowing who the divergents are – this is clear when Tori tells Beatrice not to tell ANYONE that she is divergent. She is almost panicked that she knows this information. It seems that to be different is to be dangerous, and whoever is in charge has obviously instilled this fear into everyone, which may mean that those in charge are intimidating or even corrupt (or at least scary enough to fear).
