List of Speakers and Presenters

Mr. Joel Kangiser – Washington State Department of Agriculture – Prior to joining WSDA in 1990, Joel worked in the structural pest control industry conducting inspections and providing treatments. In 1991, Joel worked with industry stakeholders in drafting the original WDO rules that were later adopted by the WSDA Director. He served as the Department’s PCI specialist until 1995 and serviced five years as Assistant Program Manager for the Department’s Registration Services. Most recently, he has served as a Compliance Case Review Officer. In addition to performing case reviews, Joel works on compliance issues, as well as issues involving possible changes to the WSDA rules and regulations.

Mr. Redwood Kardon - Code Check Redwood is a retired electrician, certified combination building inspector, electrical inspector, technical advisor, author and instructor with thirty years of experience in construction. He was a building inspector for the City of Oakland for twelve years, an installation manager for Harmony Foods for five years and has worked in all aspects of the electrical trade from bathroom remodels to chemical plants. For the past ten years, Redwood has conducted highly-acclaimed training seminars all across the country for building inspectors, electricians, contractors, architects and engineers. Redwood is the original creator of the widely popular CODE CHECK series of manuals and has been technical advisor for numerous other publications.

Mr. Gary Nordeen – Washington State Extension Energy Program – Gary is an Energy Program Coordinator with extensive knowledge of building, energy, and ventilation codes and related issues. He has worked with state and utility energy conservation programs since 1985. Gary is an ICC-certified Building Official, Inspector and Plans Examiner. Currently, Gary provides code training for building department staff, designers, builders, and the general public, assists with code development for the Washington State Building Code Council, and provides technical assistance to local jurisdictions and the general public.

Mr. Bruce Schoonmaker – A-FFIX LLC Bruce founded A-FFIX LLC and EarthquakePrepared.com in 1999. A-FFIX LLC is a general contracting company devoted to preparing the Puget Sound region for earthquakes. Bruce has lectured on Earthquake Preparedness for the Seattle Emergency Management, and leads seminars on the subject with Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other local hardware stores. Bruce is a founding Board member of Seattle Habitat for Humanity and a graduate of the University of Washington.
