THE PETITION APPLICATION

For Board Certification

The members of the Board of Directors (BOD) of the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP) believe that exercise physiologists with the doctorate degree should be given the opportunity to "petition" the Board of Certification (BOC) for the professional EPC credential. The following steps consist of Part A of the BOC Petition Application.

Part A: Instructional Steps

1.  Complete the Petition Application for the EPC credential (Part B: Petition Application).

2.  Submit a Curriculum Vita (or Resume) with the Petition. If you are in academia, the CV should identify your academic degrees and courses taught at the college/university level. If you are working in the clinical or research area, where appropriate, present a list of workshops and/or seminars you have been responsible in setting up.

3.  Submit a list of hands-on laboratory skills and/or clinical/research experiences that you either teach or engage in on a regular basis.

4.  If you are already a member of ASEP, your check for $300 with the EPC Petition Application must be made payable to ASEP.

5.  If you are not a member of ASEP, your check of $425 must be made payable to ASEP. The difference of $125 is the ASEP annual membership fee for the Board Certified Professional.

6.  Please enclose the check, a copy of your official transcripts, and any supporting materials deemed important in your EPC Petition Application.

7.  Send everything to the ASEP National Office, c/o Dr. Tommy Boone, 5127 McQuade Road, Duluth, MN 55804

8.  If you have questions, use one of the following email addresses ( or / or ) to contact the ASEP National Office or call 218-340-3496.

9.  Members of the BOC will review your petition and membership applications along with your submitted materials. This process will take two weeks.

10.  If you are confirmed, the ASEP National Office will be instructed to send an official EPC Certificate plus an ASEP Membership Certificate. Your check will be placed in the ASEP account. If you are not confirmed by the BOC, you will be informed of the necessary requirements that you will need to earn the ASEP Board Certification. Also, one-half of the $300 check required of the EPC Petition Application will be returned to you.

Part C: Board of Certification

Administrative Policies and Services

Certification Fee

In addition to the fee to sit for the EPC exam, there is an annual administrative fee, much like a licensing fee. The fee is used to help support the activities of the Board of Certification. Every Board Certified Exercise Physiologist is required to pay the annual fee. As a member of ASEP, the certification fee is included in your membership dues.

Keeping the EPC Credential Credible

Earning the EPC credential is the first step. Keeping the credential credible is the next step, and it must be maintained on an annual basis by:

1.  Adherence to the ASEP Code of Ethics.

2.  Adherence to the ASEP Standards of Professional Practice.

3.  Annual ASEP membership and, therefore, payment of the annual membership fee that includes the Board of Certification annual EPC fee.

4.  Completion of continuing education credits.

IMPORTANT: The ASEP membership dues (and therefore the EPC annual fee) must be paid by January 15 of each new calendar year or membership status is changed to "non-member." ASEP membership is required to keep the EPC credential "active." The ASEP non-membership requires the Board of Certification to classify the EPC exercise physiologist as "inactive." The inactive EPC is not recognized by the BOC as a credible certification.

Because of the role played by the BOC and ASEP in response to letters, phone calls, and emails from potential employers and employment services to verify that the job seeker is in good standing with the EPC, and given that more employment is tied to the EPC credential, it is therefore imperative that the Board Certified Exercise Physiologist keeps the credential requirements up-to-date on an annual basis. Hence, to ensure the integrity of the credential, the ASEP National Office and the BOC must (when requested by employers and other stakeholders) report the facts as they actually are. This means that the exercise physiologist with the EPC credential is 100% responsible for keeping the EPC credential credible.

Responsibility of the Board of Certification

Among the numerous responsibilities of the Board of Certification, in terms of the Petition Process, the Board is responsible for protecting the public sector by ensuring that all EPCs are competent Board Certified Exercise Physiologists. It is all about being accountable, especially to every EPC who also has the right to hold the Board accountable to upholding the integrity of the certification process.

Part D: Final Step in the Petition Process

Please read and write in your full name both in the blank within the paragraph and at the bottom. Then, date the submission of the Petition Application.

I, ______, make this "petition" application for a bona fide EPC credential. I authorize ASEP-BOD and/or members of the BOC of The Center to communicate the outcome of my petition to any and all public sector authorities, employers, and others (as it relates specifically to the use of the title: Exercise Physiologist Certified; also known as Board Certified Exercise Physiologist). I consent to and authorize the respective Boards to request information relevant to this petition and my eligibility, certification, recertification, and review of certification and for any entity to furnish this information to the members of the respective Boards. Thus, I hereby release, discharge, and exonerate the ASEP-BOD and members of the BOC and, where necessary for verification, the Center's officers, directors, employees, committee members, agents, and any person furnishing documents, records, and other information relating to my eligibility, recertification, or review of certification, from any and all liability of any nature and kind arising out of the furnishing or inspection of all documents, records, and other information and any investigation and evaluation by respective Boards of ASEP and The Center.
