Job Description

Job Title: Maintenance Electrical Technician

Department: Engineering / Maintenance (Mechanical or Electrical)

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor / Plant Engineer

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

Provides maintenance troubleshooting and fabrication expertise to the facility for the discharge of assigned work orders and projects in the areas of electrical and mechanical machine problems, improvements, and safety. The position also provides support for some limited engineering type functions and Production activities. This person will, at times assist the Engineering in the planning, directing, and coordinating of the activities concerned with the Engineering and Maintenance departments. This position will entail a hands on approach to maintenance work, and will also require an in depth knowledge of sound Electrical or Mechanical trade practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide labor and expertise for daily maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Hands-on project involvement including fabrication, assembly and installation of apparatus and machinery.
  • Understand the functionality of the equipment within the facility to assess production needs and troubleshoot various problems.
  • Time management, both actual, and functional.
  • Provide training for operators, and other maintenance personnel in the areas of machine operation, troubleshooting and safety.
  • Thorough close involvement with the daily activities of the shift production personnel, be aware of repetitive problems, and generate proposed resolutions for those issues.
  • Understand and assist implementation of administrative systems within the Engineering / Maintenance Department.
  • Maintain the organization of machine manuals, drawings and prints.
  • Generate documentation for assigned projects including drawings, schematics, and layouts.
  • Must possess a good understanding and respect for rotating machinery.
  • Must show and encourage good safety habits.
  • Must be available for ‘call-in’ during periods of machine trouble.
  • Must possess a healthy work ethic.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Basic computer knowledge using ‘windows’.
  • Must complete all paperwork and clerical type assignments.
  • Must take responsibility for work assigned
  • Ability to work with others in the facility no matter what their level of responsibility.
  • Maintain a clean, neat work area.
  • Exhibit a willingness to work overtime and shift work, and attend training courses for skill development.
  • Follow all plant Safety Rules, GMPs, and other procedural training requirements.

Requirements Specific to trade:

Electrical Technicians:

  • Possess a thorough understanding of electrical theory and the National Electric Code
  • Ability to install and troubleshoot control circuits and communication systems
  • A thorough knowledge of process control / instrumentation, and A.C. / D.C. motor control architecture
  • Ability to read and understand electrical test and recording equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand various electrical, mechanical and fluid schematics and blueprints.
  • Proficient with hand and power tools (each technician must provide his/her own hand tools in sufficient quantity and quality to perform the job.)
  • Ability to use basic machine shop equipment

Additional Skills to trade that are desired:

  • A working knowledge of PLC based systems and AC / DC drives systems. (Rockwell PLC software, Allen & Bradley and Parker/SSD drives preferred)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent and 3-5 years related experience or training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents such as blueprints, schematics, flow charts and mechanical and electrical drawings, general business reports, and technical procedures. Ability to complete required paper work and documentation related to daily activities. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply sound mechanical or electrical formulae, which will include trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and fault analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Constantly operates hand tools and manual dexterity.
