Being employed at Cooper pertains to my major and future goals as a Coach and Health Promoter in the public service because it gives me hands on experience working directly individuals in need. The Critical Care Unit at Cooper is for unstable patients in need of immediate procedures, or medications for their blood pressure to stabilize. Patients come in from all aspects and causes. Not only does this job relate to Health Promotion, but Cooper has many different community outreach and public health education programs that I could be a part of in the future. My long term goal is to be a full time teacher and strength coach for secondary education, but I am going to need to get my feet wet in order to get there. NREMT-B & Barrington Ambulance

I am currently a part time employee at Barrington Ambulance Association. I have been employed there working as an emergency medical technician for 5 months. My job duties include providing basic life support to citizens of Barrington who are in need of emergency medical treatment. Also using the skills required of an EMT-B I am required to transfer care to a continuing care facility in a safe and professional manner without incident. I am certified nationally through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. This requires 72 hours of continuing education annually to keep my certification active and to keep my employment at Barrington. This job directly relates to my future career because of working directly with patients in need of care. Whether it is an emergency trauma call , or a leg injury that has yet to heal correctly, I am required to be treat symptoms accordingly and create a calm and safe environment for the patient. This relates to my future career as a Public Health Educator because I would be working directly with people with all sorts of health problems that range from the exact type of calls that I get working 911. Working as an EMT-B is ground zero of where acute health problems start so it gives me incite on how serious and potentially life threatening certain health issues can cause.

CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION: STROKE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT. (4 COURSES)

With my employment at Cooper they offer a variety of different continuing education opportunities to strengthen your resume and advance your career by becoming more marketable with specialized education. I took a 4 hour course on Stroke education, assessment, and treatment. This is a certified nursing board class that certifies me to be available to assess stroke symptoms and treat accordingly to my highest level of education in the medical field. This course relates to my future career as a public health educator because it gives me a firm grasp of the consequences of taking care of a patient who has a now or previous neurological injury or disability. Working directly with people who have these sort of symptoms can be very frustrating and you can feel like there is no way to communicate/understand. This course gave me the incite to be able to communicate with people who of had a previous stroke and treat them accordingly for example : washing, feeding, rehabbing, communicating, sympathizing, and recommending further dietary and physical therapy treatment plans. This was a very informative course that I would recommend to anyone who is entering a Health and Wellness field that wants to be able to work better with patients who have had previous neurological illnesses/injury.
