Policies and Guidelines for the Operation of the Career Preparation Program in the AmarilloIndependentSchool District
Career Preparation
Career Preparationis a method of instruction for individuals who, through written training agreements between a school and employers, receive instruction, including required academic courses and related career and technical education instruction. The experience is planned and supervised by the school and employer so that each contributes to the education and employability of the individual. NOTE: Career Preparation is not a “work release program”.
Training Station
Atraining station site is a business which employs Career Preparationstudents and provides supervised work experience in accordance with the written training agreement. The training station must be AISD approved and acceptability of the training station is at the discretion of the teacher/coordinator.
Attendance and Scheduling Policies
Students should be aware that success in school and attendance has precedence over the demands of their employment. The following guidelines relate to school attendance and job training.
- If a student is absent any part of the school day and goes to work, that student may be given an unexcused absence for classes missed.
- On the day they are absent, the student is required to notify the Career Preparation teacher/coordinator; their employer; and the school attendance office.
Personal Appearance and Grooming
Students must meet and observe all employer policies regarding dress code, uniform, body piercing, tattoos, and distracting hairstyles.
Use of Technology
Student will abide by employer technology policy i.e., cell phone, iPod, MP3 player, etc.
Scheduling of Work Day
Ideally, students would be scheduled to work during the portion of the school day when they are not in class. Realistically, business hours often do not coincide with the school day. Many employers, by the nature of their business, rush hours and holiday seasons, have schedules which call for rotation or and/or irregular hours. Students enrolled in Career Preparation courses will leave the school campus after their last class. Parents and students will assume responsibility for such time when the student is not in class and/or until the student reports to their training station.
Course Credit
Students must be employed an average of 15 hours per week in order to receive state credit for the course. The teacher/coordinator is responsible for monitoring student work schedules for compliance with this policy. In addition, in order to fulfill minimum work requirements, students must be in an approved training station with a training agreement for at least four weeks of any six weeks grading period if they are to receive a passing grade. Also, in order to receive credit, students need to complete all academic course requirements.
Quitting or Changing Jobs
The Career Preparation courses are designed to be a year-long training program. If a student changes or quits their job without the permission of the teacher/coordinator, they may be removed from the program at the end of the semester. In addition, the student’s grade may be penalized.
Removal from Career Preparation Program
Failure of a student to comply with school district rules, company policies as well as local, state and federal laws may be considered justification for removal from the class. Students who are removed from the program may lose credit for the course. Students removed for one Career Preparation class will not be allowed to enroll in any other Career Preparation class for the remainder of the school year.
Unemployed Students
If a student becomes unemployed during a semester and does not secure employment within two weeks, they may be placed in an alternate school setting.
Student Suspension
If a student is suspended from school, the student will not receive credit for time worked during school hours.
Student Driving on the Job
Liability for a student driving on the job will be the responsibility of the mentor. This is in accordance to the US Department of Labor regulations relating to the Hazardous Occupations Orders.
Students under 18 years of age are banned from driving a motor vehicle or work as an outside helper on motor vehicles - bans operating motor vehicles on public roads and working as outside helpers on motor vehicles (except 17-year-olds may drive cars or small trucks during daylight hours for limited times and under strictly limited circumstances.)
Leaving School Campus
The student is to leave the campus immediately after dismissal from their last class. At no time after conclusion of the student’s last scheduled class is a student to be in the vicinity of any school during school hours unless authorized by the teacher/coordinator or campus administration.
Student Leadership Organizations
Each program area has a student leadership organization which is an integral component of the state curriculum. Membership and participation is encouraged for all students.
I have read the Operating Policies and Guidelines for the Amarillo ISD Career Preparation Program. I understand them and agree to abide by them as outlined in the attached document.
