4. Special Recognitions:

a.  Student of the Month:

Foothill Elementary School is proud to recognize Cassandra Trevino as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for May 2006.

Cassandra was chosen for this honor by the fifth grade teachers at Foothill Elementary because of her dedication to education. Within the classroom, Cassandra demonstrates an energetic zeal for learning, from keeping a thesaurus in her desk to improve the language in her writing to studying constellations. Cassandra constantly surprises her teachers with her creativity. Most recently, she took first prize in the District Science Fair for her research on the stability and strength of cable-stayed and suspension bridges.

When Cassandra isn’t in the classroom, she can be found reading or playing one of her favorite sports, football, basketball, or softball. She can also be found playing the flute or guitar. Cassandra has been asked to participate in the People to People World Leadership Forum. During a week long program, she will display and model leadership qualities.

It is a great pleasure to honor Cassandra Trevino as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for May 2006.

b.  Certificated Employee of the Month:

Foothill Elementary School is honored to recognize Denise Castaneda as the Alvord Unified School District Certificated Employee of the Month for May 2006.

Mrs. Castaneda was selected for this honor from a vote by both certificated and classified employees at Foothill. She is an intelligent, highly capable classroom teacher who has demonstrated a great deal of positive leadership ability while serving as the interim instructional teaching coach in addition to her regular duties as a first grade teacher.

Since assuming her duties as a first grade classroom teacher in 1999, Mrs. Castaneda has established herself as an innovative classroom teacher who has sound judgment and maintains the highest standards in carrying our her assignment. Mrs. Castaneda’s focus on moving in a direction that strengthens the educational experiences for children, her tireless energy, and her ability to inspire other staff members have won her the respect and support of both her colleagues and the community she serves.

It is a great pleasure to honor Denise Castaneda as the Alvord Unified School District Certificated Employee of the Month for May 2006.

b. Accept Gifts:

1) Mercy Derosier donated classroom supplies valued at $10.00 to Terrace Elementary School’s Half-Time program.

2) Organized Sports donated $100.00 to Loma Vista Middle School’s Jump Rope for the Heart Program for incentives and prizes.

c. Adopt Resolution No. 48 – Day of the Teacher: Wednesday, May 10, 2006, has been designated as “California Day of the Teacher” by the Legislature of the State of California. This resolution is presented in recognition of Alvord teachers.

d. Adopt Resolution No. 49 – Classified School Employee Week: The week of May 21-27, 2006, has been designated as “Classified School Employee Week” in California by the California School Employees Association and the California State Board of Education. This resolution is presented in recognition of Alvord classified employees.

g. Approve Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Contract No. C-7262: Board approval is requested for an Agreement of Participation between Riverside County Superintendent of Schools (RCOE), California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) and Alvord Unified School District from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006 for the Intern Program.

Fiscal Impact: $5,440.00 (Revenue from Riverside County Office of Education)

h. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – San Diego County Office of Education: Board approval is requested for consultant services between the San Diego County Office of Education and Alvord Unified School District to provide AB466 professional development training in the State adopted reading intervention and middle/high school language arts textbooks on August 7-11, 2006.

Fiscal Impact: $52,500.00 (Categorical – Title II – Part A)

i. Amend Agreement with the Orange County Superintendent of Schools – Inside the Outdoors Field Program: Board approval is requested to amend the agreement with the Orange County Superintendent of Schools for Myra Linn Elementary School to participate in the Inside the Outdoors Field Program on May 10, 2006 at Irvine Regional Park.

j. Ratify Purchase Order List Number 17-2005-2006: Board ratification is requested for Purchase Order List Number 17 Purchase Order Numbers 10647 through 10886 (Total 240); Short Form Contract Numbers 97 through 98 (Total 2); and Child Nutrition Purchase Order Numbers 5836 through 5860 (Total 15) in the amount of $895,278.77

k. Approve Change Order – R.I.S. Contractors, Inc. – Child Nutrition Center: Board approval is requested for a change order for R.I.S. Contractors, Inc. relating to the Child Nutrition Center.

l. Approve Notice of Completion – AAA Roofing by Gene, Inc. – Child Nutrition Center: Board approval is requested to file a Notice of Completion for AAA Roofing by Gene, Inc. for completion of their contract obligations relating to the Child Nutrition Center.

Approve Amendment “A” to Master Agreement – Higginson & Cartozian Architects, Inc. – Master Relocatable Bid Package: Board approval is requested of Amendment “A” to the Master Agreement with Higginson & Cartozian Architects, Inc. to prepare a design bid package for obtaining pricing for various sizes and configurations of modular buildings.

8. Receive (Sunshine) Classified Negotiation Initial Reopener Contract Proposal: California School Employee Association Chapter 339 President, Doris Gale, and Assistant Superintendent, Personnel Services, Suzanne Pickup, are pleased to announce to the Alvord Unified School District Board of Education that the parties have agreed to mutually sunshine Reopeners of the Classified Bargaining Agreement for the year beginning December 1, 2006. The articles to be reopened are Wages and Benefits, Hours and Overtime, and Leave Provisions.
