Alvin Lady Yellowjackets Basketball Player Handbook
2016-2017
The following standards and rules are written so that there will be completeunderstanding as to what is expected of the players, parents, and coaches in this program. It is most important for our basketball program to create and operate in an atmosphere in which expectations and standards are clearly defined. These basic standards of behavior will act as guidelines as we work toward achieving our program, team, and individual goals.
What We Believe
“I am a member of the team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.”
Our Goal
Our goal is to do our best to get better every day as people and as basketball players.
Trophies, awards, and championships are not our goals. Getting better every single day is our goal.
How We Define Success
"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming" - John Wooden
Coaches’ Commitment to Our Players
•We commit to doing what is best for the team and our program.
•We commit to challenging you and pushing you to become the very best that you can be.
•We commit to building positive and meaningful relationships with you.
•We commit to caring for you and telling you the truth.
•We commit to using basketball to teach you life lessons and skills that you will use far beyond a basketball court.
•We commit to being a good example for you.
•We commit to making this a safe environment in which you have the freedom to work hard, grow, and be yourself.
•We commit to communicating to you what we expect and holding you accountable to meet those standards.
•We commit to doing our best for you and giving you our best every single day.

Expectations as a Student-Athlete:
- I will maintain an 80 or better in all classes and a satisfactory mark in conduct. If I am earning below an 80 in any class I will attend tutorials for that class at a minimum of twice a week until this grade is brought up. I will keep track of my tutorials on my Tutorial Card and return it to the coach of my team.
- I will be in attendance to all of my classes every day. I will not skip class ever. I understand that my attendance is mandatory and it plays a huge role in my success as a student-athlete.
- I will not be tardy to my classes. I will arrive to class on time and be prepared to work.
- I will always be respectful to adults. I will not back talk, raise my voice at, or speak to adults with an attitude or negative tone. This includes both verbal and non-verbal behaviors.
- I will behave appropriately in class, during transitions between classes, and everywhere on the Alvin High School campus.
- It is not ok for me to make negative statements or say inappropriate words.

- I will not be placed in detention, ECO, I.S.S., or Saturday detention. Or any other disciplinary program. If I am placed in any of these I will immediately notify my coach.
Practice Expectations
- All players and coaches must uphold the standards outlined in the Lady Jacket Way. If players cannot uphold these standard they will receive practice/game consequences and be told to leave. These characteristics are the cornerstones of our program and we will hold ourselves and each other to these standards every day.
- I will always give my best effort and work as hard as I can to help my team be the best it can be.
- If players are not on the court at least ten minutes prior to the start of practice, they will be considered late. Players will have practice/game consequences for being late to practice. Constant tardiness to practice may lead to the removal from the program.
- If a player misses a practice (excused) it is her responsibility to get with a manager to do makeup conditioning before she can return to normal practice. The makeup conditioning will consist of running a mile before the next practice.
- If a player misses a practice (unexcused) she will meet with the coaching staff and her parents. She will complete practice conditioning (to be determined by the coach), be suspended for 1 game, and complete a mile before being able to return to practice. If a player has another unexcused practice she will be removed from the basketball program.
- We will always practice in our practice uniform (jersey, shorts, and basketball shoes). Failure to be properly dressed out will result in practice consequences. Constant failure to properly dress out will result in practice/game consequences or removal from the program.
- Our practice jerseys will always be tucked in. Our jerseys have to be tucked in during games, so we will practice how we play. Failure to uphold this standard will result in practice consequences.
- Players are not allowed to wear cutoff shirts that show their sports bra. Failure to uphold this standard will result in practice consequences.
- Players are not allowed to wear their hair down or wear jewelry during practice. Jewelry is not allowed and hair must be up. Failure to uphold this standard will result in practice consequences.
- During practice we will not walk on the court. We will jog on and off the court and as we transition from one drill to the next. Failure to uphold this standard will result in practice consequences.
- We will not talk, play, joke, or socialize about things that have nothing to do with basketball during practice. Players that cannot adhere to this standard will have practice/game consequences or removed from the program.
- If players are not in a specific drill, they are to be on the sideline standing and actively listening. Failure to actively listen will result in practice/game consequences.
- Practice sessions are closed sessions and not open to anyone not on the team or involved in the program. To ensure maximum learning time and avoid distractions, this includes a player’s parents, siblings, relatives, or friends.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices are NOT allowed during practice. Any player that brings a cell phone into practice will have practice/game consequences. These items are expected to be locked up in the player’s lockers.
- Players are expected to look coaches and other players in the eyes and not talk while they or the team is being addressed by a coach during practice. Failure to do so will result in practice consequences/game consequences.
