Public art EOI

Expressions of Interest are now open for a public art commission as part of the work to complete the Kororoit Creek Trail. Toyota Australia last year announced a $1.8 million investment towards the immediate construction of around 2km of the 7.5km shared trail for pedestrians and cyclists. The investment includes provision for a series of public artworks or artwork elements and interpretative signage along the trail. This public art commission will help ensure the trail is a unique experience for everybody to enjoy - an environment that has been transformed over the last 10 years thanks to the tireless work of the Hobsons Bay community and the Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek. Expressions of Interest close on Monday, 18 April. The works would be scheduled for installation by July 2017. For details, contact Tania Blackwell on 9932 1000 or email Work on the trail will begin later this year.

Works, works and more works

Works on the Cresser Reserve rock revetment wall, beach access ramp and new drainage outlet are about to start. The works will help protect the reserve against future predicted sea level rises over the next 50 years and the most extreme storm events.

Roads will also get a spruce up with drainage, kerb and channel works beginning in Bluegum Drive, Altona on 28 March and in Chambers Road, Altona North on 18 April. Both road programs are expected to take three weeks to complete.

Former Caltex terminal

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has refused the proposed master plan for the former Caltex terminal. The master plan had proposed 600 dwellings with heights up to 10 storeys at the South Kingsville site.

The master plan for the former Caltex site was excessive and did not take into account the character of the neighbouring properties, the impact on the nearby national freight line and Spotswood Maintenance Centre or the affect cars from 600 additional dwellings would have on local traffic congestion.

Council is pleased that VCAT supported our stance on the building heights along the site’s northern boundary being excessive and not justified. The applicant has 28 days to appeal.

Simcock Avenue drainage

Works have begun to install drainage into Simcock Avenue, Spotswood. This project will take five months to complete.

The new drainage connection provides a significant link in the overall drainage system for Spotswood. Council installs storm water drainage to ensure that water is able to drain from our streets. At Simcock Avenue the new storm water drain will reduce surface flooding and ponding issues in an industrialised area, keeping business moving.

As we install the new drainage system, we will also be constructing kerb and channel on both sides of the road and creating 90 degree parking bays on the southern side of Simcock Avenue.

HD Graham Reserve

Council has partnered with Sport and Recreation Victoria to construct a junior extension to the existing skate park at HD Graham Reserve.

The extension will provide young children and beginners within the existing skate facility to learn and develop their skating, scootering and cycling skills in a safe and fun environment before attempting the larger and technically more advanced sections of the skate park.

In addition to the new junior skate extension to the skate park, Council will also be undertaking an extensive tree planting program in and around the reserve. The skate park linking with the adjacent BMX park and the free public tennis courts at HD Graham Reserve is able to provide a diverse range of activities that caters for everyone.

AB Shaw Reserve to beflushed with facilities

Work will begin in April on the new public toilet facility at the popular AB Shaw Reserve play space. The facility will include two unisex accessible toilets with a baby change table. Construction will take approximately eight weeks and will not affect access to the play space, barbecue or picnic facilities.

Fencing projects

The fencing around the Laverton Park football/cricket oval will soon be upgraded to a 1.1m high chain mesh fence. Also on the job sheet are sections of the fence along Bruce Comben Reserve and W.E Hubble Reserve, which will be replaced with timber posts. A section of the chain mesh at McCormack Park, on the western side of Bladin Street, will also be upgraded. Works are expected to be completed by mid-April.
