Objective:

Students will be able to associate each letter of the alphabet with an object whose name begins with that letter. Students will also demonstrate proficiency in using the PowerPoint presentation program by creating a slide show with one slide per alphabet letter with a picture of an object for each letter. (Students in grades 1-2 and accelerated K students will write a sentence about each object)

PowerPoint Skills

1. New, Save, Exit and Open files

2. Insert New Slides using AutoLayout

3. Insert & edit text within the “Title” area and the “Add Text” area

3. Insert, Move and re-size Clip Art

4. Change the Background of a Slide using Color and Fill Effects (Grade 1)

5. Apply a Slide Transition that advances On Mouse Click to all slides (Grade 2)


Preparation & Procedures

Alphabet Book

Preparation:

1. Explain to students that they will be creating a slide show ‘booklet’ using letters of the alphabet. Show them the example booklet in PowerPoint.

2. For K5, students will type the alphabet letter and add a graphic, for grades 1-2 students will type a sentence, (e.g.,‘A is for apple’) and add a graphic.

3. The time frame for this lesson will vary depending on the grade and skill level of the students.

* You may wish to practice a few times without saving

Procedures:

1. Open a PowerPoint “Blank Presentation”. (Office XP opens automatically”)

2. Save: Click File, Save As, determine where the lesson will be saved, and choose a filename for students, for example, ‘Kyle ABC’. Click Save.

3. Choose Title Slide from the AutoLayout (Office XP opens in Title Slide)

- In the Click to add title area type ‘My ABC Book’.

- In the Click to add subtitle area add ‘by Student Name‘

4. Click Insert, New Slide, choose the “Text & Clip Art” layout

- In Click to add title area, type the letter, then space bar for Upper Case

For 1-2, type the letter and what it stands for (e.g., ‘A is for apple’)

- In the Click to add text area, type the letter again, then space bar

For 1-2, create a short sentence using the name of the picture

- Click in the Double click to add clip art area, then press “Enter”

For 1-2, simply Double Click in this area

5. In the Search Text Box, type the word for the image you want to add,

e.g.,‘apple’. Click on the picture and it will be inserted into the slide.

6. Move the cursor to the center of the picture and click until you see a 4-sided

arrow, then click and hold the mouse to move the picture.

7. Resize the picture to fit the slide by clicking on one of the corner circles. When you see a double-headed arrow, click and hold to pull the picture to the desired size.

8.  Repeat steps 4 through 7 for the target letters of the alphabet.

Accelerated Levels:

. 10. Change the Background of a slide using Color and Fill Effects. Click Format, Background, Background Fill, choose a color or effect and click the Apply button

11.  Add Slide Transitions: Click on Slide Show, Slide Transition, then choose a transition effect.

12.  Add Custom Animations
