i. The reading of newspaper is a very common activity. Almost everyone who can read is likely to read a newspaper on most days, if not every day. It will not be wrong if we say that for most people reading newspapers is the common type of reading activity.
ii. In addition to the daily there is another type of newspaper that is published weekly or fortnightly. This is usually called a news magazine. A news magazine frequently tries to go beyond mere reporting and to analyze matters in some detail. A news magazine, in essence, is different from a daily newspaper, in the sense that it has to be selective and deal with events that are no longer very recent.
iii. Newspapers belong to the world of journalism. They are published daily to inform the reading public of the day-to-day affairs and are by definition topical (i.e. concerned with current topics and events) in nature. Thus, as the newspaper itself suggests, the reporting of news is the basic (though by no means the only) purpose of a newspaper.
