Orientation Day

The first day of each term has a number of activities to welcome new students:

10:00 - 11:00 Student orientation is held on the 5th of March, June, September and December for the respective terms. New students are required to report to the Language Center's EZ Cafe at 10:00 AM for this meeting. At this Orientation Meeting, teachers and returning students from each country will be present to welcome you and to answer in detail all the questions that you may have. The Director will introduce some of the important policies and the staff of the Center. To conclude, each student will be asked to briefly introduce him/herself.

11:00-11:10 Students who have not studied Chinese before: sign up for level 001 or 101, depending on their background knowledge of spoken Chinese or Chinese characters.

11:10 - 12:00 At the end of the meeting we will have a buffet to allow everyone to socialize and get to know other future classmates.

12:00 - 12:45 In order to get familiar with your new surroundings, we will take all newcomers on a campus tour with some returning students of different countries to translate and explain where necessary.

12:45 - 14:00 Placement test for those students who have studied Chinese before. This test consists of a written part (around 30 minutes) and a short interview with a Language Center teacher. At the end of the placement test, the teacher will suggest an appropriate level for each participant or a suitable selection of courses that can serve as an individual study plan. Students will be required to select courses within the level range suggested after the placement test.

If you have studied Chinese before:

After the introductory presentation, sign up for the Placement Test
Go to the library after the campus tour to take the test (12:45 start)
After all parts of test have been completed and the teacher has suggested a level, go to Sepia Cafe on the 2nd floor of the library to be assigned a class (A, B, or C of the level decided upon)

If you have not studied Chinese before:

After the introductory presentation, sign up for level 001 or level 101, and be assigned a class (A, B, or C of the level decided upon)
