THE COURSE: Algebra I Honors,is a two-semester class open to students who have successfully completed accelerated Math 8 and have been recommended for this course. This course presents a formal approach to the development of algebra skills and concepts necessary for students who plan to continue in Geometry, Algebra II and other advanced college preparatory courses. Algebra I is associated with high school content standards within four conceptual categories: Number & Quantity, Algebra, Functions, and Statistics & Probability.
CONTENT EMPHASIS: Not all of the content in a given grade is emphasized equally in the standards. The list of content standards for each grade is not a flat, one-dimensional checklist; this is by design. There are sometimes strong differences of emphasis even within a single domain. Some clusters require greater emphasis than the others based on the depth of the ideas, the time that they take to master, and/or their importance to future mathematics or the demands of college and career readiness. In addition, an intense focus on the most critical material at each grade allows depth in learning, which is carried out through the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Without such focus, attention to the practices would be difficult and unrealistic, as would best practices like formative assessment.
THE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE: The Standards for Mathematical Practice form an important part of the Algebra I course, as well:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

THE FORMAT: The class will be comprised of discussion, lecture, demonstration, cooperative groups. Graphing calculator (TI-84) will be used a few time throughout the year and is suggested. Notebooks are not required but strongly suggested.
YOUR GRADE: Tests, Quizzes and any group work will be 80% and homework will be 20%.
GRADING: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=0-59%.
BEHAVIOR: Saugus High School rules are in effect at all times (Cell phone policy will be enforced.) Simply, 1) be on time 2) do your best 3) behave yourself. Specifically, no hats, no gum popping, and be kind. If you miss class due to excessive tardiness you will not be able to make up the work you have missed.
MAKE UP WORK: Homework will be given the same number of days to make up as you were absent or by arrangement with Mr. Eaton. Make up tests and quizzes by arrangement with Mr. Eaton in J1004. I will post homework to my site daily.
CHEATING: Zero on the assignment, conference with the teacher, notify parent or guardian, and referral to school administration.
Calculator: A Graphing Calculator is recognized as an instrument that is beneficial for advancing the skills being taught in this course. It is an inherent part of this higher level class that many complex problems can only be solved using one of these devices. It is also a tool that is required on all A.P. math and science tests in May (as required by the College Board) and it is beneficial for each student to have their own calculator in order to gain familiarity with its use. The department has a limited number of calculators for checkout purposes. Please contact the teacher to take advantage of this option.
Materials: It is highly recommended that students in this class come prepared with certain materials that would assist in their organization, readiness, and ultimate academic success. Having a notebook with paper, writing implements (pens and/or pencils), and a ruler represent a foundational aspect of these recommended materials.
