Algebra 1 CP Project
Scatter Plots and Lines of Best Fit
You may work with one partner or by yourself.
Due:Wednesday, 11/7/09
Format:Poster
What to do:
- Invent a question that requires two numerical answers.
- Collect data from at least 30 people.
- Draw a scatter plot of your data (you may use Excel if you know how).
- Graph the line of best fit on your scatter plot.
- Describe the correlation if there is one (negative, positive, none) and explain why the correlation makes sense or doesn’t. If there isn’t a clear correlation, explain why that could be true.
What should be on the poster:
- The question(s) you asked
- The data you collectedin a table (i.e. people’s answers to your questions…should be anonymous)
- The graph of the scatter plot with the line of best fit
- A description of the correlation in paragraph form
- Neatness counts! Make sure your project is neat, legible, creative, colorful, etc.

EXAMPLE
Question:How many hours of sleep did you get the night before your history test, and what was your history test score?

RUBRIC
3 / 2 / 1 / 0Question(s) / The question(s) asked make sense for this project and require numerical answers. / One question makes sense for this project and requires a numerical answer. / Two questions were asked, but they do not make sense or do not have numerical answers. / No questions were asked.
Table / The table contains 30 or more sets of data. / The table contains between 25-29 sets of data. / The table contains 15-24 sets of data. / There is no table or the table contains less than 15 sets of data.
Scatterplot / The scatterplot contains a title, labeled axis, 30 or more points that are plotted correctly, and a line of best fit. / The scatterplot is missing 1 or 2 of the following: title, labeled axis, points plotted correctly, line of best fit. / The scatterplot is missing 3 or 4 of the following: title, labeled axis, points plotted correctly, line of best fit. / The scatterplot is missing 5 or more of the following: title, labeled axis, points plotted correctly, line of best fit.
Description / The description correctly determines a correlation and clearly explains why or why not the correlation makes sense in at least 5 sentences. / The description correctly determines a correlation but does not clearly explain why or why not it makes sense OR there are only 3 or 4 sentences written. / The description does not determine a correlation OR the correlation is incorrect OR does not explain why or why not it makes sense OR there are less than 3 sentences written. / There is no description or what is written does not make sense.
Overall Project / The project is neat, legible, creative, and colorful. The table and scatterplot were created on the computer or with a ruler. / The project is legible, but not very neat, creative, or colorful. / It appears a lot of time was not spent on the project. It is not neat, the computer or ruler was not used. / Project is very sloppy and it appears no time was spent working on it.
Self Assessment / Self assessment is completed. / Self assessment is not completed.
