Course Policy 2016-2017

Algebra 1 is a one-year High School Algebra course offered to eighth graders which covers the California State Standards for Algebra 1. This class is the same Algebra 1 that students are taking in high school. It is a challenging class and students will benefit from excellent attendance, taking notes daily, referring to their notes before beginning homework, carefully correcting their homework papers in class, correcting any errors made and reviewing several days prior to tests. Asking questions in class and seeking additional assistance if needed will also be helpful. Students with proficient study habits and class performance (A’s, B’s) will be recommended to take Geometry next year.

Grades will be determined on a point basis. Students will earn points on daily homework checks (2 points each), chapter quizzes (around 25 points each), and chapter tests (around 50 points each). The letter grade will be based on the percentage of the total possible points the total points the student has earned. Scores will NOT be rounded!!!

Grades will be updated on Aeries within a week after each test or quiz.

Homework will be assigned every day, including Fridays. Homework must include the original problem (unless it is a word problem), be neatly done in pencil, and should show the student’s work in a logical manner. Homework will be checked every day and each assignment will be worth 2 points. Late work will not be accepted.

In case of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to determine what was missed. A student may have as many days as he/she was absent to make up missing work for an excused absence. A student who misses only one school day is required to make up all the work, including tests/quizzes, the day he/she returns. Make-up tests may be harder than the original test.

In an effort to keep organized, each student should have a math designated spiral notebook, preferable graph paper spiral. The spiral will contain warm-up problems, class notes, homework, worksheets, quizzes, and tests. We will have chapter quizzes or tests about every two weeks.

Students are expected to bring a spiral notebook (8½x11 preferred), a pen, and pencils to class each day. Students are expected to be in their seats by the tardy bell and to behave in a calm, mature, polite manner at all times. Citizenship grades will be determined by classroom behavior, participation, homework completion, etc. in accordance to the Miraleste Citizenship Rubric.

The MIS webste and Aeries are excellent tools that I will be using throughout the year for communication. Aeries will be used mainly for grade updates while my website will provide a calendar, daily assignments and printable notes for every lesson. I recommend checking in with both regularly. I am looking forward to a fabulous year. Please feel free to share concerns or ask questions at any time. I can be reached at (310) 732-0900 ext. 255 or at my e-mail address: .
