Angstrom Microsystems, Inc.2004-present

Angstrom Microsystems is a manufacturer of high performance computers and compute clusters based on the AMD Opteron Microprocessor.

DIRECTOR OF CUSTOMER CARE/ SENIOR SERVER ARCHITECT

  • Led the Operations/Deployment Group at Angstrom Microsystems. My group was responsible for the daily operations of the corporate infrastructure. As Director I was directly responsible for physical plant and network security.
  • Led the Customer Service team at Angstrom Microsystems. The customer service team was responsible for all post sales customer support. Customer Care was closely aligned with Deployment, with team members considered interchangeable.
  • Major architect of next generation blade server system based on dual and quad processors.
  • Architect of several major custom solutions for Angstrom Microsystems customers including
  • 500+ blade Dual Opteron system for the University of Wuppertal, inclusive of network and support infrastructure. This was when tested #73 on the TOP500 list
  • 250+ blade Quad Opteron system for Berliner Film Companie, inclusive of network and support infrastructure.
  • 100+ blade Dual Opteron system for NIH
  • Led the deployment teams for all blade based systems sold by Angstrom Microsystems

GameLogic, Inc.2003-2004

GameLogic is a high tech venture backed startup which provides scalable high performance interactive gaming systems for use where they are legal.

DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING OPERATIONS

  • Led the Engineering Operations group at GameLogic. My group was responsible for the daily operations of the corporate infrastructure. As Director I was directly responsible for physical plant and network security.
  • Designed the current production systems the LuckyMe product is deployed on, including the management VPN. This project included vendor negotiations, as well as engineering design and prototyping, as well as personally installing the production systems in hosting facilities in the UK.
  • Led the regulatory compliance and documentation effort for our product. LuckyMe is licensed by the Alderney Gaming Control Commssion, an authority of the States of Alderney.
  • Coordinated the infrastructure migration as part of the corporate move to larger facilities, including networking, telephony, and all computing devices.

Independent Consultant2002-2003

An Independent Consultant in systems integration, architecture and networking. Specializing in small businesses providing complete solutions and managed updates, as a ‘rent an IT department’

My commercial clients included: Angstrom Microsystems, Azta Inc, Benevue Technologies, CyberSoft International, InterWorking Labs. I am supporting on a Pro-Bono basis the United States Fencing Association.

Akamai Technologies, Inc., Cambridge, MA2000-2002

Akamai Technologies, Inc, is the leading Content Distribution Network, with a global presence inclusive of deployments in over one thousand networks in over sixty countries. As a member of the management team I was generally responsible for building the Akamai production network based on input from management and my engineering peers.

DIRECTOR OF DEPLOYMENT/ SENIOR ARCHITECT

  • Led the Deployment group at Akamai. My group consisted of twenty-five FTE tasked with building out the worlds largest Linux based, multiply connected service network. In 18 months my group installed over 6,500 Linux based servers, and was responsible for hardware maintenance, international logistics, and network provisioning
  • Personally performed laboratory and engineering work on new hardware platforms including servers, FC-SAN, and routers in a Linux environment. Selected new server platforms and network gear.
  • Managed a $40,000,000 annual capital budget, with responsibility for hardware selection, supplier relationships, and price negotiation. Taking changes in base pricing into account, achieved a 35% unit cost reduction in Akamai’s server platform from suppliers including IBM, Compaq, VA Linux and Angstrom Microsystems. Effectively unlimited purchase signing authority.
  • Provided both direct engineering and executive level sales support for Akamai’s traditional network partnership program, and expanded systems and network consultancy, which leveraged my deployment group.
  • Heavily involved in the engineering and business development of multiple new Akamai products based on a modified Linux environment.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey,Piscataway, NJ1983-2000

As manager I was responsible for the daily operations of the Rutgers University backbone network. The backbone connected all three major Rutgers campuses, as well as several outlying remote locations. I was also responsible for all telecommuting operations inclusive of POTS and Digital dialups.

MANAGER, BACKBONE OPERATIONS (1999 – 2000)

  • Led a staff of ten FTE, who ran the Rutgers University Network Backbone.
  • Negotiated bandwidth and telephony contracts related to data networking.
  • Led a major portion of the data electronics design of the RUNET 2000 project, a $100-million build-out that added a multi-gigabit backbone and high-speed access to 500 buildings. This was based on Cisco 12000 and Cisco 6500 series hardware.
  • Served as main architect and installation program manager of the complete upgrade of the existing Rutgers network, with 850 subnets and 25,000 hosts, from shared 10Base5 to a fully switched OC12/ATM and 100BaseX network. This was based on Cisco LS1010 and 7xxx series hardware.
  • Served as the technical interface with Cisco systems for software issues involving Cisco IOS in the production environment.
  • Technical representative for Rutgers on various aspects of the Internet2 project , participated in early QoS experiments.
  • Analyzed network security options to support systems staff in Oracle Financials rollout.
  • Led project to produce an asset-tracking database, based on Oracle.
  • Led project to migrate from earlier generation of digital dialups to Cisco AccessPath 3 technology.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS ANALYST I (1996 – 1999)

  • Added management of the network operations group R&D to previous tasks.
  • Worked actively in the IETF in the NASREQ and AAA working groups.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS ANALYST II (1990 - 1995)

  • Performed systems capacity planning at all levels; network (LAN & WAN) design, installation, and maintenance; Novell Netware systems management; Unix system management (SunOS), and daily and emergency response to networking problems.
  • Under contract to Uunet managed AlterNet’s first New Jersey POP, which was located at Rutgers.
  • Worked on many strategic initiatives which included:
  • Needs analysis, design, budgeting, and installation of a back-end system to support all 55,000 undergraduate students for e-mail, batch job support and other academic processing
  • Research and finally installation of long-range spread-spectrum radio links
  • Fiber optic OC3/OC12 long haul campus interconnects from the Piscataway campus to campuses in Camden and Newark. This included engineering, installation and acquisition of the long haul loops.
  • Research, planning, purchase, and installation of fully digital V34bis dialup pools.
  • Migration of the academic MVS and VMS systems to a Sun Solaris platform.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS ANALYST III (1987-1990)

  • Performed microcomputer networking support, serial communications support, general hardware support for systems larger than microcomputers, daily and emergency response to networking problems, and management of both UNIX and VMS systems necessary to telecommunications functions.
  • Configured and maintained Cisco Routers and Terminal servers. Influenced IOS feature list through active interaction with Cisco engineering.
  • Worked on many strategic initiatives which included:
  • Migration from RS-232 matrix switching to IP based terminal servers and networked microcomputers.
  • Design and installation of Rutgers pilot dormitory networking project. Initially this project involved bringing RS-232 serial, RS-422 AppleTalk and 10BaseT Ethernet to 1200 beds in a six building complex. All Cisco data electronics.
  • Installation and maintenance of the first Novell Netware server at Rutgers Computing Services.
  • Designed and managed telecommunications basis for the Rutgers UUCP backbone relay site.
  • Beta tested Cisco IOS releases from 8.1 through 9.14. Beta tested Cisco hardware ranging from CSC-3 and the AGS+ chassis through Cisco 7000 series

PROGRAMMER ANALYST (1983 - 1987)

  • Supported microcomputers and microcomputer based applications on two campuses.
  • Managed the daily operation of a remote unit, providing hardware support for all systems.
  • Performed technical coordination in conjunction with purchasing department for all microcomputer purchasing.
  • System Administrator of Rutgers Newark’s first Unix servers.
  • Developed visual front end to ISAM driven databases in COBOL.
  • Developed software such as device drivers for plotters and printers, and systems support software for UNIX systems.

OPERATOR (1981 – 1983)

  • Under supervision of the systems staff performed daily backups.
  • Under supervision of the systems staff ran batch jobs.
  • Kept printing complex loaded with paper and ribbons. Printers were IBM 1403 and Printronix 600.

InterOP-NET NOC Team, Belmont, CA1988-present

The InterOP-NET NOC team is responsible for the design and deployment of the world’s largest transient network, the infrastructure for Networld+InterOP™. The InterOP-Net NOC team is a not employed by Inter-OP but rather is a loose consortium of top flight engineers from industry, education and the government.

NOC TEAM MEMBER

  • Worked on all levels of the design and implementation of the InterOP-NET in six US locations, as well as having major input into the first international networks: Paris (1993), and Tokyo (1994).
  • Acted as the InterOP host master for all shows in 1993 & 1994, managed 10,000 hosts on a class A network. InterOP has been assigned 45.0.0.0/8 for use in temporary networks.
  • Managed all aspects of external connectivity for all US shows in1993, 1994, 1997, and 1998.
  • In 2000, coordinated the Internet2 section of the Ilabs project, and acted as the lead educator regarding Internet2 in 2001.
  • With other NOC team members, managed systems for the 1994 SuperComputing Show in Washington DC. Systems for this show were supplied by Sun Microsystems, and were based on the then new Solaris 2.4
  • Managed physical installation for the 1995 SuperComputing Show in San Diego. This included all aspects of the data electronics and all patching and interconnections. Cisco and Wellfleet provided the data electronics. Managed saturation wireless installation using early Xircom 2.4Ghz FHSS (not 802.11 compatible)
  • Helped host the spring 1996 IETF in Los Angeles CA and the winter 1999 IETF in Washington DC. Installed 801.11b compatible network for use in high-density environment.
