On leaving the RAF in Jan 1959 having successfully completed an "Aircraft Electrical Apprenticeship", joined BTH (British Thomson Houston) as Standards Engineer. As part of the GEC mergers they became AEI Semiconductors, Lincoln.
As an aside I remember the yield on Germanium Transistors was 14 %. In December 1959 they announced that they had 5amp Scr's in stock. And were very excited about it. How times move on
Moved on to De Havilland Missile Division in the Test Equipment Design Office. Working on test equipment for Red Top & Firestreak Missiles.
Changed to sales as Internal Sales Liaison Engineer with Salford Electric in the early '60s, based at Magnet House, Kingsway. (The headquarters of GEC) Progressed to outside direct Sales with George Ellison, manufacturers of Switchgear and Motor Control Equipment.
Then back into electronics with Cambion, ending up as their Sales Manager. On to Gresham Lion, Power Supply Division as Sales Manager. Joined Lambda as European Marketing Manager. Installed as Product Marketing Manager for Advance, Power Supply Division, Bishops Stortford where I was responsible for the complete budget, new product introductions and a team of seven Sales Engineers.
Then spent 4 years as a freelance Marketing and PR Consultant handling Fluke, Lemco, Columbia Automation, E N Bray, Derritron, Walmore and other industrial accounts.
Commenced Dec'75, 10 plus years with Tektronix UK as Marketing Communications Manager. Responsible for an annual budget of £1.1 Million all aspects of Marketing Communications, Advertising, PR, Seminars, Conferences, Exhibitions, Leaflets, Brochure Design and Tele Marketing.
On leaving in 1985 formed Nutwood UK Limited a Marketing Communications Agency handling accounts in the electronics Arena, including Tektronix.
Also formed Nutwood Publicity and Nutwood Exhibitions. Organized and staged IDEX 1987 (International Defence Exhibition) at Brighton and CIE (Components in Electronics) at Business Design Center London 1988. Plus a number of Regional Electronics shows.
Handled Publicity and PR for a number of Electronics companies.
In 1995 launched The EMC Journal published 6 times per year and the EMC Yearbook with financial support from DTI.
Organised the EMCUK Exhibition & Conference at Newbury Racecourse in October, closed after 12 years.
Launched EMCUK Academy “EMC Training for Industry by Industry”.
Organised the PLT Summit meetings held at the IEE.
Chairman FEI EMC Strategy Group 1997/98.
CEO of the EMC Industries Association (EMCIA).
Qualifications:
Became a full Member of the Institute of Marketing in February 1970. Member IEEE.
