ALABAMA STATEWIDE BIG READ
February through April 2010
Nine Regions for The Big Read
To make The Big Read project more manageable, the state was divided into nine regions. There will be state and regional events available for everyone to attend. However, the strength of The Big Read comes from local communities working together for a common purpose. You, your friends, clubs, organizations, and businesses can help make this event a success by:
- Volunteering to host an event.
- Financially sponsoring an event.
- Offering to give a program on a topic surrounding the themes of the event.
- Volunteering to help place flyers around thecommunity.
- Greeting people at events.
- Decorating the library or places where events will take place.
- Leading a book discussion group.
- Providing refreshments.

How Does My Community Get Involved?
Each community’s Big Read includes a local kick-off event to launch the program; major events devoted specifically to The Big Read book (e.g., panel discussions, lectures, public readings); events using the book as a point of departure (e.g., film screenings, theatrical readings, exhibits); and book discussions in diverse locations and aimed at a wide range of audiences.
Public libraries across the state are working to build partnerships with local officials, businesses, organizations, clubs, and schools to offer educational and fun activities that will focus around themes from the chosen Big Read title: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Examples of the activities you can promote in your area are:
Community picnic in the park -- Old-fashioned game day
Dress-alike Tom or Becky – Book discussions
Historical lectures – Art exhibits -- River activities
Literacy fairs – Theatrical performances
How Can I Help?
Contact your local public library to ask if they will be participating in The Statewide Big Read in 2010. As planning begins and partnerships expand, help will be needed in a variety of areas including presenters, volunteers, promoters, and sponsors.
You can find more information about The Big Read by contacting your local Alabama Public Library.
