Vidhan Sabha Elections, 2003

Ajmer Division: A Fact sheet

There are 226 candidates contesting the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha 2003 election from 32 constituencies in Ajmer Division. Of these, we were able to get affidavits of 136 candidates from the 32 constituencies.[1] Of the affidavits we received we were able to use 135 while preparing the rankings because some were incomplete, or illegible and other related reasons. Each table contains a footnote indicating the exact number of affidavits used and other explanations.

Among the affidavits we have studied, there are nineteen candidates with a criminal record. The BJP has fielded four and the Congress five such candidates. The remaining are mainly independents.

Our rankings are based on the values declared by candidates. The affidavits filed by the candidates are incomplete in many respects. Some candidates have stated the area of their properties, but not its value. Similarly, value of jewellery may be stated but not its weight. If complete information were declared, our rankings are likely to be affected.

The declared value of assets of "electoral candidates" includes that of their spouse(s) and dependents.

[1] The Rajasthan Election Commission webpage has the affidavits for all the candidates. However, these were uploaded on their website after we had started our analysis and so we were unable to include information on all the candidates in our analysis.

[2] There are 226 contestants from Ajmer Division of which we have used 135 affidavits. We were not able to use all the affidavits we received affidavits because some were incomplete, illegible, or for other related reasons. The information presented in this table is for those 135 candidates for whom we have full information.

[3] Affidavits for 135 electoral candidates out of a total of 226 contesting candidates were included while preparing this table.

[4] Total wealth has been calculated as the sum of the candidate’s declared value of agricultural and non-agricultural land, buildings, houses and apartments, cash, bank balances, other investments such as shares, debentures, etc. and the declared value of their jewellery. The information for this table has been compiled from affidavits of 135 electoral candidates.

[5] This table has been compiled from affidavits of 135 electoral candidates. Some candidates have given incomplete information about their property. E.g., some have mentioned the area of land owned, but not its value, while others have given the value of their land but not the area. For the purpose of this table, ranking has been done based on declared information on value of land. Rankings might change if complete information on land values were declared.

[6] This table has been compiled from affidavits of 135 electoral candidates. The ranking of the candidates is based on the total value of non-agricultural land holdings. Non-agricultural land holdings include land in rural areas (which sometimes is reported in bighas), buildings, houses and apartments owned by the candidate, their spouse and their dependents. Some candidates have given incomplete information about their property. E.g., some have mentioned the area of land owned, but not its value, while others have given the value of their land but not the area. For the purpose of this table, ranking has been done based on declared information on value of land. Rankings might change if complete information on land values were declared.

[7] This table has been compiled from affidavits of 135 electoral candidates. The total number of vehicles includes two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Further, the category of four-wheelers includes cars, trucks, tractors etc.

[8] This table has been compiled from affidavits of 135 electoral candidates. Many candidates reported gold owned in “tolas”. This has been converted into grams assuming a conversion rate of 10 grams to one tola. The total declared value of jewellery includes the value of precious stones such as diamonds. This explains why some candidates may report very little gold and silver, but still have high total values of jewellery owned by them. Some candidates have given incomplete information about their jewellery. E.g., some have mentioned the weight, but not its value, while others have given the value of their jewellery but not the weight. For the purpose of this table, ranking has been done based on declared information on value of jewellery. Rankings might change if complete information on jewellery values were declared.

[9] There are 226 contestants from Udaipur Division for which we have received 135 affidavits. We were not able to use all the affidavits because some were incomplete, illegible, or for other reasons. The information on caste is missing for 16 candidates in the 135 affidavits that we have received. The information presented in this table is for those candidates for whom we have full information.

[10] Major political parties, and other parties fielding more than three candidates, were included in this table. The category of others includes INLD, LJNSP, RBSP, RLD, RNP, RSNM and SHS.

[11] The information on caste for the remaining candidates was not available at the time of doing the analysis.
