Iredell Statesville Schools Summer Enrichment Camps 2016

Weeks of June 20-23 and June 27-30

**Eligible grade levels are for the 2016-2017 school year (ISS rising 3rd-12th grade students)

Intro to Guitar $20

Lakeshore Middle School - June 20 - June 23

12:30-3:30 pm (rising 3rd-5th grade students)

Students will learn notes, simple chords and songs on the guitar. Lessons will cover and discuss the history of the guitar, styles of music played on the guitar and various types of guitars. At the end of the camp, students will have a booklet of note songs and chord songs they can play and sing! Students must provide their own guitar.

Junior Robotics with Lego We Do $20

Lakeshore Middle School - June 20 – June 23

12:30 – 3:30 pm (rising 3rd and 4th grade students)

This camp is for students who are interested in constructing LEGO creations and bringing them to life. It is a great introduction to engineering, basic programming and robotics. Campers will build and program interactive creations that feature motors, tilt sensors and sounds using Lego We Do Robotics kits and software

Beginning Robotics

Statesville Middle School - June 20- June 23 $20

June 27-30 $20

8:30 - 11:30 am (rising 3rd – 8th grade students)

This course is for rising 3rd - 8th grade students who are interested in mathematics and science. They should feel comfortable with computers and building. Students will be creating Lego robots to accomplish specific tasks. The instructor will guide students through the basics of computer programming and robotics.

Advanced Robotics

Statesville Middle School - June 20 - June 23 $20

June 27-30 $20

12:30 - 3:30 pm (rising 5th- 12th grade students)

This course is for self-motivated students in grades 5 - 12. Students should have experience in robotics. The instructor will guide students through a simulation adventure using NXT and/or EV3 robotics. Students are encouraged to think creatively and outside the box.

Art

Troutman Elementary School -June 27 - June 30

8:30 – 11:30 am(rising 7th– 12thgrade students) $20

12:30 –3:30 pm(rising 3rd– 6thgrade students) $20

Rising 3rd- 12th grade students may register for a session of this camp. This hands-on course will provide beginning to advanced skills for students with a focus on different artists, drawing various points of perspective and mandala design. Students will create original works of art that utilize the elements and principles of art. Campers will learn new skills and take home original pieces of art.

Theater Arts Camp

South Iredell High School - June 20 – June 23

8:30 – 11:30 am (rising 3rd – 8th grade students) $20

12:30 – 3:30 pm (rising 6th – 12th grade students) $20

Rising 3rd – 12th grade students who are interested in drama/performance arts should try a session of this course. Students will develop theatre literacy with a focus on movement, dialogue, and expression. A performance will occur at the conclusion of the course.

Origami Camp

Troutman Elementary School-June 20-23rd

8:30-11:30 (rising 4th-5th) $20

12:30-3:30 (rising 6th-8th Grade) $20

Rising 4th-8th graders are invited to come learn origami! ​​Students will learn the history of origami and how Japanese first used it to teach young ladies to fold their kimonos. Now it’s a wonderful art form. Students will learn how to fold a variety of objects out of a square of paper, no cutting, no glue! Join us as we learn to create projects like a pinwheel, a candy dish, a crane, and even a Christmas ornament!

Elementary (Rising 3rd-5th Grade) $20

Tired of making posters and project display boards? Let’s unleash the creativity within you! In this camp, we will explore all kinds of apps that go beyond “skill and drill” of math facts. We’ll build a comprehensive project by smashing together “mini projects” we create using various apps. Come show us what you can do!

Middle (Rising 6th-8th) $20

An Apple a day keeps the BOREDOM away! This camp will prove just that! Spend the week exploring and using Apple apps in innovative ways that showcase your creativity. From Photo and Keynote to iMovie, come devise a robust plan for a product that makes a statement about YOU! Bring your “A” game and let’s get to smashing

Global Problem Solvers $20

South Iredell High School June 27-30th 8:30-11:30

6th-12th Graders

This course will be a week long critical thinking exercise that looks into how you can solve both real life and hypothetical global issues going on in our world today. By looking at social injustice, economic inequality, resource distribution, and geopolitics you will try to come up with action plans to combat these real world problems. Are you up to the challenge?

Build a Better You $20

Northview-June 27-30th

8:30-11:30 am (rising 6th-12th grade students)

Work with an ISS counselor to learn how to prepare for college admission, select a college and set future goals. Build leadership and communication skills. You will participate in a community service project during this camp.

Odyssey of the Mind $20

Lakeshore Elementary School - June 27 - June 30

Elementary 8:30 am - 12:30 pm (rising 3rd –9 thgrade students)

This camp is for rising 3rd -9th grade students who are interested in creative thinking and creative problem solving. Students will learn about the Odyssey of the Mind program and its two components—long term problem solving and spontaneous creative thinking. Students will participate in creative thinking activities, costume and set design, script writing, and acting. Students will also explore the creative use of materials in hands-on building of props and sets. An interest in theatre is welcome, but not required. Odyssey of the Mind and this camp are about creativity and thinking outside the box. Both a performance and an informational meeting are planned for the final session.

Chess $20

Lakeshore Middle School - June 20- June 23

8:30 - 11:30 am (rising 3rd – 12th grade students)

This camp is for rising 3rd – 12th grade students who are interested in the game of chess. The class will be divided by student ability. This course will enable students to learn the game as well as learn new technique and strategies to improve their personal game.

Culinary

CATS - June 20 - June 23

8:30-11:30 am (rising 3rd-5th grade students) $20

12:30 - 3:30 pm (rising 5th - 12th grade students) $20

Have fun this summer in a profession culinary kitchen. Kids will enjoy working alongside classmates learning to make a variety of dishes. The instructor will cover fundamentals of reading recipes, measuring ingredients and the importance of kitchen safety.

Grades 3-5 will make homemade marshmallows, cookies, and pizza.

Grades 6-8 will work with yeast. Creating cinnamon rolls, pizza, and shaping dough into different types of breads.

Your little chef will gain confidence in the kitchen as we practice a variety of techniques

Extreme Engineering

Lakeshore Middle School – June 27 - June 30

This camp will build on students’ natural curiosity through fun and challenging hands on activities to learn the Engineering Design Process and STEM Principles. Activities will range from creating “Recycling Boats” to designing “Balloon Rockets”.

Beginning CodingCamp $20

ADR Education Center - June 20 - June 23

8:30 - 11:30 am(rising 3rd – 5th grade students)

This course is for rising 3rd- 5thgrade students who are interested in learning the basics of coding. Registrants should feel comfortable with basic computer skills. Also, 21stCentury learning skills, such as critical thinking and self-directed learning, are a must. Students will begin with an introduction to coding using Code.Org Hour of Coding.The instructor will guide students through the basics of coding through modeling, floor work, and hands-on learning with computers. Students will advance at their own levels.Students will need to bring headphones or ear buds to camp each day.

CSI Statesville-Piecing together the Truth $20

Northview and Statesville Museum -June 27-30th

9:00-12:00 (Rising 4-8th grade students)

Take on the role of a history detective and step into Statesville’s past! Investigate mysteries from Statesville and interact with real world artifacts from the town. Take a walking tour of downtown Statesville and get to know your town! Work inside of an actual museum as you solve your very own mystery!

Advanced Coding Camp $20

ADR Education Center - June 20 - June 23

12:30 - 3:30 pm (rising 6th – 12th grade students)

This course is for rising 6th – 12th grade students who are self-motivated. Students should have experience in computer operation and keyboarding skills. 21st Century learning skills, such as critical thinking and self-directed learning, are a must. The instructor will guide students through a 20 hour course in basic to advanced coding. Students are encouraged to think creatively and outside the box. The learning from this course can extend to home use. Students will need to bring headphones or ear buds to camp each day.

All registration for Summer Camp is available online through the I-SS webpage or your school’s webpage. I-SS webpage can be located @ http://www.iss.k12.nc.us/. Online registration will open April 20th and close June 3rd. Payments for all camps may also be made online. We strongly encourage this payment option.
