AICE European History Syllabus – Mr. Diemert

“Historical understanding defines people’s very sense of what is thinkable and achievable today”

Outline of class: This class will aim to give you a historical understanding that you can use in your adult life as a citizen of the United States. We will deeply explore many themes and make connections to present day events as we examine European History. This class strives to be comparable to a college level class. You will be asked not only know the material I teach in class but also know material from the book that was not covered in class. It is recommended that you read each chapter on your own. You will also be asked to complete many detailed projects and write many critical thinking essays.

Structure: Here are the main things you need to know about this class

  1. BYOD: We try to use BYOD to its fullest extent. I post all of my lessons everyday on Edmodo. You will be posting projects and making comments on projects with Edmodo. We also take numerous online quizzes through Socrative. You should, but are not required, to download both apps for your phone or tablet. They are both free. You should check Edmodo every day for the day’s lessons and other updates. During class you should only have your phone out if we are taking a quiz, doing research or you are doing work assigned that requires your phone. During lecture portions of the class your phone should be put away. If it’s out during lecture, I will take your phone.
  1. Start-Up: When you enter the room you should login to Edmodo. The post for the day will include the presentation I am giving that day as well as a question for you to answer. You should reply to my post with your answer to the question. Your answer will be graded daily, with a correct answer being worth 2 points. By the end of the week you can earn 10 points for the start-up activity. This is an easy, weekly grade and should help keep your grade up as well as help you review. If you are absent, you can go onto Edmodo wherever you are and answer the question, or answer it by the end of the week to receive credit. If you skip the question when you are present, you can make up the question for half credit.
  2. Tests: All of our class tests will mimic the AICE exam
  3. Late work: Late work will be accepted but you will lose 20% of the points for turning it in late
