Team Activity -Large Round Baler

Scenario:

A farmer has 300 acres of hay and 90 cows, located in a separate dry lot. You’ve been average 3T of hay per acre, and this baler produced 1200lb bales. The farmer is getting ready to harvest his summer mixed grass hay crop. Prior to starting he is going to preform general maintenance and repairs that didn’t get done last year. The farmer also needs to determine if he has enough storage for the bales he will produce.

Objective:

Skills/Repairs:It is your group’s job to determine what problems need to be fixed and develop a parts & price list for operation during the entire 2018 hay season.

Trouble Shooting/Manual Work: Assemble and adjust the chain and sprockets according to specifications provided
Calculations: Use the information from the scenario to answer the production questions given regarding hay production, transportation, and storage

Instructions:

Skills/Repairs

  • Bearing A needs replaced. Using the devices provided, determine which bearing is the correct replacement.
  • Does the roller chain (tagged B) need to be replaced? If so how many links do you need and what is the price of the new chain and a master link?
  • Check for missing and broken teeth in rows A & B. How many teeth need to be replaced? What is the cost for the replacement teeth?
  • Determine if the switch is in working condition or not using the multi-meter
  • Based on the scenario, estimate the amount of netwrap needed for one year’s hay
    (not including waste)
  • Enter each needed item in the provided replacement parts/supplies sheet, then total the estimated cost for baler repairs and netwrap for 2018

Trouble Shooting/Manual Work

  • The chain needs to be installed on the baler. Used the diagram to properly install the chain on the demonstration board.
  • Properly put the chain on the device
  • The driver runs clockwise
  • Use the master link to connect the chain
  • Properly tighten the chain using the idler for tension

Calculations

  • Your fields produced 3T of hay per acre each season. How many 1200 lb bales should you expect to bale each season?
  • How many rolls of net wrap will you need to bale for the season? There are 9700 linear feet in a roll of net wrap and costs $275. The bales are 4ft x 6ft and have a 72 inch diameter and you will wrap each bale 2.5 times.
  • You have a 34 foot inline trailer, where bales are stacked single wide, face to face. How many bales can you haul at one time?
  • You have a 42’ wide x 60’ long Quonset building to stack your hay for the winter. Our loader will only stack bales 3 high and we will use the stacking pattern provided. What is the maximum number of bales you can fit in your building? How many tons of hay will fit in the building?
