Camp Boggy Creek is open year-round and utilizes nearly 1,800 volunteers a year to accomplish its mission to enrich the lives of children who have chronic or life threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe, and medically sound. During this trip, participants will serve as camp counselors at Camp Boggy Creek for students with life threatening heart illnesses.

Florida State Alternative Breaks

Florida State Alternative Breaks facilitates service immersion experiences for students to serve with and in a diverse community, learn about social issues, and develop as leaders and active citizens.

Florida State Alternative Breaks is an Associate Member of Break Away, a national not-for-profit organization. As an Associate Member, it is our privilege to uphold the core philosophies of Break Away. These include the Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break: Strong Direct Service, Orientation, Education, Training, Reflection, Reorientation, Diversity, and Alcohol and Other Drug Free. To participate, you must be a currently enrolled Florida State University student or a faculty/staff member in good standing with the University.

Application and Participation

In order to participate in this trip, students must complete the FSAB application as well as an application for Camp Boggy Creek by 5:00pm on Friday, March 7. The Camp Boggy Creek Volunteer application is online at The FSAB application can be brought to the Center for Leadership and Social Change in the Dunlap Student Success Center or emailed to . FSAB is happy to provide support and assistance as you fill out the Camp Boggy Creek application. Email Elaine Giles at with any questions or to set up a time to meet with someone.

Pre-Trip Meeting

Participants are required to attend one pre-trip meeting in April. This meeting date and time will be determined by the site leader after participants are accepted by Camp Boggy Creek.

Transportation

For a full alternative breaks experience, FSAB encourages all participants to ride together in a van to Camp Boggy Creek. However, because this trip takes place during the summer and participants may not all bein Tallahassee, students will have the option to either ride in the van from Tallahassee to Boggy Creek or meet the group at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida.

Trip Costs

The cost of the trip is $25. The FSAB program fees include transportation to the service site, a t-shirt, and training materials.Payment is due upon application acceptance from FSAB and Camp Boggy Creek. FSAB does NOT issue refunds. If an unavoidable emergency occurs, you must immediately notify the FSAB Graduate Assistant of your decision to leave the trip. Emergencies do not include decisions you made to pursue other activities. There will be no refunds for any student dismissed from the program for reasons of misconduct or failure to comply with Florida State University or FSAB policies.
