Focus Questions to consider:

1. Compare and contrast the political and economic views of the Hamiltonian Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans. When, why, and how did the differences between the two parties blur? Create a chart to compare as many points of view as possible.

2. (a) Thomas Jefferson’s first term as president was so successful that he overwhelmingly won reelection in 1804. How did Jefferson’s philosophy of government shape his policies toward public expenditures, the judiciary, and the Louisiana Purchase?

(b) His second term, in contrast, was marked by frustration and failure. What divisions emerged within the Republican party during Jefferson’s second term? Discuss the achievements of Jefferson's first term and the problems that beset his second.

3. What led James Madison to abandon Jefferson’s policy of “peaceable coercion” and enter into a nearly disastrous war with Britain from 1812-1814? What, if anything, did the United States gain from that war? Consider the following in determining what the US gained from the War of 1812:

•foreign relations

•industry and transportation

•nationalism

•Native Americans

4. “[T]he greatest accomplishment of the political leaders of the early Republic was to fashion a workable body of political institutions and customs to govern the young nation.” Discuss the ways in which political leaders fashioned political institutions and customs.

Consider the following individuals.

•Thomas Jefferson

•John Marshall

•James Madison

Use as many specific examples as possible to illustrate your points.

5. How did each of these events and people factor into the pressures in the early part of the 19th century to force Native Americans from their lands along the western frontier of the United States?

•Lewis and Clark Expedition

•War of 1812

•Tecumseh

•William Henry Harrison

•Andrew Jackson
