After School Enrichment Class Descriptions Fall 2011
All of the classes are divided into age categories. Read the descriptions, complete the enclosed form, and return it in an envelope marked “PTA AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT” by Friday, October 7th.
Cheerleading / Grades: K-3 / Thursday / Instructor: Lindsay ChangoThis enthusiastic class gives participants the opportunity to learn cheers and technical movements all while promoting teamwork and school spirit. There will be NO tumbling.
Cost: $ 60.00 for instructor fees
Chess
/ Grades: 1-5 / Thursday / Instructor: Chess AmericaNo previous knowledge of chess necessary.All equipment is supplied by Chess America. Each class will consist of a fun, interactive learning period followed by supervised game play. Both beginner and experienced players are welcome. All students will be much better chess players by the end of the session.

Design Your Line
/ Grades: 2-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Gina Nagy Burns of The Painted SoleDesign Your Line is a unique art and design course that uses the medium of paint and a myriad of tools and techniques to inspire student to create custom multi-layered designs on a variety of wearable and non-wearable surfaces. Design your line encourages and nurtures self-expression, creative problem solving, design planning/goals and original thinking. You will complete a ball cap and sling backpack projects during this course.
Cost: $105.00 for supplies & instructor fees
Dynamic Designs / Grades:K-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Diane Sikora
Children will have lots of fun gluing, designing, and decorating! Both boys and girls will utilize an assortment of materials to create projects in this enjoyable art class each week. Note: Different projects will be introduced in each session according to the season.

Glass Fusion
/ Grades: K-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Joan TomascoThis interactive class teaches the foundation of glass fusing while exploring different techniques to create fun, colorful fused glass projects from transparent, opaque and iridescent glasses. Projects may include: wind chimes, night lights, bowls, magnets & more. Learn about the other forms that glass can take from stringers and noodles to liquid glass.

Karate
/ Grades: K-5 / Thursday / Instructor: Yasmin LopezKids will learn beginning karate skills, and develop cardio, balance, respect and focusing techniques through the use of fun filled, age-specific games and activities.

Kids are Fit
/ Grades: 1-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Certified Personal Trainer, Rob TaltyTons of fun with bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and army crawls. Various games will be played using jump ropes, relay races and endurance skills. Games will be played individually as well as on teams. This class will make you stronger, faster, healthier and skilled for any and all sports. Be prepared to sweat while having fun!!!

LEGO Robotics
/ Grades: K-2 / Wednesday / Instructor: Cyber Robotics LearningLearn two exciting areas of robotics:
Wheels and Axles – Hands-on learning about single and separate axles, steering, rollers, winch handles, and friction.
Gears – Students build a merry-go-round and a fan. Both models demonstrate how gears can multiply speed. By counting the number of turns and rotations, students can calculate the gear ratios.

LEGO Robotics
/ Grades: 3-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Cyber Robotics LearningClass uses the motivational advantages of robotics to teach math, science, technology concepts. Students will...
-Observe teacher demonstration of the following: Tankbot building instructions, Touch Sensor and Light Sensor examples, Gear demonstration, ROBOLAB programming demonstration.
-Complete several teacher assigned programming exercises that reinforce the concept the teacher demonstrated that day
-Problem solve - an Open Ended Challenge at the end of each activity that students can use to reinforce their understanding of: Programming Logic, Motors and Timers, and Light and Touch Sensors.

Magic
/ Grades: 1-5 / Thursday / Instructor: Joe FisherA behind the scenes look at how magicians do their tricks. Each week students are taught how to do magic by a real professional magician. They take home their own bag of tricks making them real magicians.

Mosaics
/ Grades: K-5 / Thursday / Instructor: Joan TomascoCreate something truly unique as you learn the ancient art of mosaics.The staff will teach you to hand paint tiles that you will use in making a wooden tray. You may also choose to include the use of shells, ocean stones, and glass in your wonderful finishes piece. Make a treasure to last a lifetime reflecting your creativity from start to finish. See an example of a mosaics tray project below. ***Alternate projects are available for repeat students***

Platypus Pottery
/ Grades: K-5 / Thursday / Instructor:Donald NoseKids will have fun creating and sculpting animals and whimsical clay characters in this fun class run by Livingston’s Platypus Pottery Studio. The children will take home a different “masterpiece” each week.

Snacks & Facts
/ Grades: K-5 / Thursday / Instructor: Robin KrasneyYour kids will love 'mixing' math, science, reading & art into this inspirational and educational cooking class! Designed to show kids that food can be fun, this class will also teach them about healthier choices & alternatives, introduce them to kitchen etiquette and at the end of each hour they will have their own 'healthy' snack to bring home! Fee includes their own 'chef-tastic' cooking kit (chef hat, apron, colander & measuring cup). *Please note that while we stay away from peanut foods & food made on equipment that processes peanuts please consult the instructor if your child has food allergies.

Snakes & Scales
/ Grades: K-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Bill BoesenbergA different reptile will be brought to class each week. The children will be able to touch and learn about the reptile and then complete an activity or craft related to that reptile. Please note that this class will be similar to the one that was offered this past fall.

Yoga
/ Grades: K-5 / Wednesday / Instructor: Robin KrasneyNot your parents’ yoga class! Kids play yoga by imitating animals and nature, and by using creative expression, games music, art and storytelling. We practice fun-filled poses and breathing exercises to promote: physical strength & flexibility, concentration, inner strength, confidence, relaxation & self-control & love for oneself inside & out. All students must bring a towel to class.
