In May of 2000, Break Away incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and is currently based out of the Center for Civic Education at Florida State University.
This program places high school (and college) students on teams in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during their summer, fall, winter and spring breaks. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment. Examples of trips students have organized are: tutoring migrant farm workers in Florida, registering voters in Mississippi, and working with the homeless in Washington, DC.
