African Professional Hunters Association to Present Prestigious

Selous Award at Safari Club International Convention

Mary Cabela will be the recipient of the 2017 Selous Award presented at Safari Club International’s 46th Annual Hunters’ Convention held in Las Vegas January 31 – February 3. Mary, along with her husband Dick and his brother James, co-founded Cabela’s in 1961. She has hunted big game across the globe, taking many trophy quality species and was presented the 2001 SCI Diana award for her accomplishments.

The African Professional Hunters Association (APHA), an organization made up of some of Africa’s most experienced and ethical professional hunters, will present its coveted Selous Award at the Safari Club International Convention in Las Vegas.

The Selous Award, named for legendary African hunter Fredrick Courtney Selous, recognizes a hunter who has a deep-rooted passion for African hunting. The award is based solely on the recipient’s inherent desire to hunt African game ethically and the recipient’s commitment to, and love for, African wildlife.

The hunters are nominated by those who witness their ethics and passion for Africa, the professional hunters who accompany them. It is not an award based upon either the number or size of trophies taken. It is not centered on the quarry taken. Rather, it celebrates the hunt itself. Each year hunters are nominated for the award by Lifetime Professional Hunter Members of APHA. Each nominee must submit information on the African countries he or she has hunted and the professional hunters they have hunted with. A randomly selected committee of seven Life APHA members reviews and evaluates each nominee, based upon the information received and then selects the one person who, in their opinion, most exemplifies the spirit of the award. In its third year, the Selous Award is arguably the pinnacle of recognition for the African hunter.

This year’s award will be presented at a banquet on Wednesday evening, January 31, 2018, at the MGM Grand, SCI’s Headquarters Hotel, during the four-day SCI convention. In addition to the Wednesday night award, the evening will include a gala dinner, auction and performance by comedian Tim Allen. Ticket information can be found at Look for more information on this and a special APHA hunt donation on the evening’s auction lineup.

African Professional Hunters Association members are limited to only experienced and ethical African Professional Hunters who have, over the years, exhibited impeccable integrity and ethics. Members of APHA regularly guide safari hunters in countries all across Africa in pursuit of both dangerous and non-dangerous game in a manner consistent with the organization’s founding principles, rules and guidelines.
