Option 1: African Travel Itinerary

Plan your ultimate African vacation! What countries would you visit? What sights would you go to see? You may choose to present your itinerary in either a PowerPoint or booklet. You may write this as if you are planning your own personal vacation, or as if you are a travel agent planning a trip for a group of people. Your itinerary should include:

  • A fun name or title for your trip – please be sure to include your name and class period somewhere on your title page or slide
  • A map or maps that detail your route and show important physical and political features of each country
  • Images of the flags of each country you will visit
  • A detailed itinerary of how long your trip will be, what sights and landmarks you will be visiting on what day, and an explanation of why you are visiting each place
  • A photo gallery of places you will visit on your trip
  • What you need to know before you go:
  • Climate and What to Wear: What types of climate regions will you be visiting? What types of clothing will you need to bring so that you are properly dressed?
  • Official Languages: What languages will you be hearing locals speak on your trip?
  • Food: What types of local food will you eat?
  • Customs: What cultural customs should you know before your visit?
  • Bibliography: to be included on the last slide or as a separate handout to be passed in with your project

Option 2: African Country Guide Book

Choose an African country that you would like to learn more about. You will research this country in depth and create a guide book that would be informative and useful to people who are planning a visit to your country. Your book should include pages dedicated to:

  • A COLORFUL, CREATIVE COVER that includes the name of your country, your name, the date, your class period, and any other pictures or images you wish to include
  • Map - A colorful map of your country depicting its major political and physical features
  • Flag - A color picture of your country’s flag
  • Fact Sheet detailing basic facts and information about your country (such as population, major cities, type of government, religion, currency, natural resources, etc.) You may use the “Fact Sheet Template” providedor create your own, so long as you include the same information.
  • A Visitor’s Guide to your country - These pages should inform prospective travelers about what to do and expect while traveling in your country. Topics that you must address include (but are not limited to):
  • Climate and Vegetation: Describe the climate regions and types of vegetation found within your country. Include maps and photos where appropriate. What type of clothing would people need to pack for their trip?
  • Official Languages: Remind visitors about the primary languages spoken in your country.
  • Culture: What are the basic elements of your country’s culture? Topics discussed could include such cultural features as food, music, art, sport, etc.
  • Customs: Are there any important cultural customs that visitors should know about before visiting your country? Describe them here!
  • What to do and where to go: Describe several popular tourist destinations and “hot spots” of your country. What should visitors do or see? Where might they go?
  • Postcards from your country - You must include at least five images of your country’s landscape and/or climate on this page. Please be sure to state what each picture is showing and include the source in your bibliography.
  • Bibliography: – Cite all sources used (including websites, articles, books, etc.) See your “Source Saver” handout for proper citation information and examples.

Option 3: Ministry of Tourism PowerPoint

This option is very similar to Option 2, but will take the form of a PowerPoint presentation. You will assume the role of your country’s Minister of Tourism, and develop a slideshow for prospective tourists that will highlight all that your country has to offer. You should have slides dedicated to:

  • Physical and Political Maps: What are the major physical and political features of your country?
  • Your country’s flag
  • Visitor’s Guide to features, facts and statistics: Outline basic information about your country such as:
  • Population
  • Type of government
  • Political leader(s)
  • Major cities
  • Religions
  • Economy (currency, natural resources, etc.)
  • Official languages
  • Education (literacy rate)
  • Culture (customs, food, music, art, sport, etc.)
  • What to do and where to go: Describe several popular tourist destinations and “hot spots” of your country. What should visitors do or see? Where might they go? Include photos where appropriate.
  • Photo gallery of your country: You must include at least six images of your country’s landscape and/or climate on this page. Please be sure to state what each picture is and include your source information in your bibliography.
  • Bibliography: – Cite all sources used (including websites, articles, books, etc.) See your “Source Saver” handout for proper citation information and examples. Can be the last slide of your presentation or as a separate handout to be turned in with your project.
