CLASSROOM CONDUCT:

§  BE ON TIME! Personal appearance/conduct will comply with Citadel standards.

§  Classes will be called to attention when the instructor enters and anytime an officer of higher rank enters the room.

§  Jackets will be hung outside the classroom.

§  Eating/drinking is permitted only if you clean areas when class ends.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS: AS402 is a survey course and serves as the capstone for Air and Space Studies course work. The AS400 cadet should comprehend the basic elements of national security policy and process. Individuals should comprehend the air and space power functions and competencies; understand selected roles of the military in society and current issues affecting the military profession as well as selected provisions of the military justice system; comprehend the responsibility, authority, and functions of an Air Force commander; apply listening, speaking, and writing skills in Air Force-peculiar formats and situations with accuracy, clarity, and appropriate style; and comprehend the factors which facilitate a smooth transition from civilian to military life.

ROTC TRAINING WEEKEND REQUIREMENTS: Attendance at ROTC Training Weekend sessions is MANDATORY for contract seniors.

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY: Refer to regulations in the Student Catalog regarding class attendance. Any cadet with absences in excess of 20% will receive an “F” for the course. Punctuality, attendance, and participation contribute to your grade. There will be frequent hands-on activities and you must participate in order to benefit.

MAKE-UP TESTS AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Make-up tests and late assignments will only be accepted if coordinated and approved by instructor. Coordination and approval must occur before class starts. In the event of extenuating circumstances special consideration will be given by instructor (see below for examples of extenuating and non-extenuating circumstances). In the event students do not coordinate with instructor to make-up the test or turn in the assignment, a penalty of 5 points per day will be given until test is completed or assignment is turned in. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate with the instructor for any make-up tests or late assignments.

1)  Extenuating circumstances are death in the family or medical treatment.

2)  Non-extenuating circumstances are sleeping through class, special leave, special orders, and/or meeting with other professors/groups/clubs.

GRADE COMPOSITION:

1. EXAMS: Two exams will be administered during the semester. These exams are mandatory and each exam is 30% of your grade. Excused absences must be coordinated with the instructor at least 24 hours PRIOR TO the test date. This includes any cadets placed on special orders. Failure to either show for the exam or coordinate an excused absence will result in a grade of ZERO.

2. ADVOCACY POWERPOINT BRIEFING: Each student will present a seven-minute professional PowerPoint briefing advocating a stance (for or against) on a current military issue or national affairs issue. Students will be graded on briefing skills and the quality of information presented. Grading will be based on a standardized evaluation sheet.

3. POSITION PAPER: In addition, each student will prepare a one to two-page Position Paper to accompany his or her advocacy PowerPoint briefing. The Position Paper is comparable to the advocacy briefing in written format. Grading will be based on correct formatting and the quality of content. (Reference the Tongue & Quill p.217-218)

4. CLASS PARTICIPATION: Class participation is 10% of your grade. You can't earn the full 10% if you don't participate during discussions. Furthermore, class absences could negatively impact your participation score. Students will fail the class with less than 80% attendance.
