AED/CPR INFORMATION/UPDATES
Florida Statute 1006.165 requires all high schools that are members of the Florida High School Athletic Association to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the school grounds. The School District of Broward County requires that all schools have an AED on school grounds. Broward County policy 5303 rule 1-Astates each school must have at least two (2) staff members, in addition to the school nurse/healthcare personnel (if applicable), trained in First Aid, AED and CPR and emergency care. The identification of trained staff members on campus is a vital link in immediately accessing qualified personnel during a medical emergency.
The names of the individuals trained and their location in the school needs to be documented on the 9-1-1 Emergency Information posters (available from the Safety Department website). The 9-1-1 posters must be printed in color. The 9-1-1 posters should be located in the health room, the front office, the cafeteria and the physical education areas. The poster must be updated yearly and whenever there is a change in personnel who provide this service. The AED unit must be carefully checked every two weeks (bi-weekly) for function and the availability of necessary supplies and the AED Readiness Inventory Log is to be completed by designated staff. The AED Readiness Inventory Log and all other forms and information are located on the HES website at Select Departments/Health Education Services/ Health Room/Documentation.
All trained personnel must have their own CPR micro-shield for providing CPR. Staff must renew their AED/CPR certification every two (2) years. It is the schools’ responsibility to ensure that the staff members responsible for providing CPR have a valid AED/CPR card.A listing of the Heartsaver AED/CPR and First Aid courses for 2012-2013 is provided on the HES website. Classes are available to any teacher, coach, after school provider or staff member. The class schedule is also posted on the Health Education Services web page including the instructions for registration.
The AED policy is provided for your reference on the HES website. Schools that have students under the age of 8 years of age with a heart condition will be provided with pediatric AED pads for use with the existing AED units (Lifepak 500). The AED units at some schools were replaced with a new unit (Heartstart), which has a pediatric key instead of pediatric pads. Schools have received equipment information for use with the new units. Trained staff designated to use an AED are required to view the new AED instructional presentation on the Health Education Services website by September 2012.
Florida Statue 401.2915 (2)(b) encourages any persons or entity in possession of an Automated External Defibrillator to notify their local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medical Director about the location of the AED. They should also notify the Local Public Safety agency that receives 911 calls about the location of the AED.
Life Management Skills/Health Teachers must be certified as Basic Life Support instructors. There are two courses that must be successfully completed in order to become a BLS instructor.
