ADVERTISING INFLUENCES MILLENNIALS THE MOST

MILLENNIALS ARE ‘IMPULSE BUYERS’

Not only are millennials more likely to make purchases after seeing or hearing advertisements compared to older generations, about 81% of millennials surveyed made a purchase after seeing or hearing an advertisement in the last 30 days, according to the “2017 Advertising Survey” from B2B ratings and reviews firm, Clutch.

ChainStoreAge.com reports that despite millennials’ higher tendency for “impulse buying” when it comes to new products and brands, Baby Boomers and others over age 55, are less influenced by advertising. Only 57% made a purchase as a result of an advertisement — regardless of the medium.

About 54% of Baby Boomers trust TV and print advertising, and just 27% trust online and social media advertising. However, 64% of millennials trust TV and print advertising, and 51% trust online and social media advertising. Millennials higher trust level stems from having more resources available to discover if a brand’s message is misleading, the study said.

Overall, consumers view traditional advertising mediums — TV, print, and radio — as the most trustworthy, while they view online and social media advertising more skeptically, the report said.

Consumer income is also a factor in advertising influence. The study found that 83% of consumers with a household income over $100,000 were more likely to make a purchase as a result of an advertisement, compared to 68% of consumers with household incomes of less than $49,999. This is due to a higher disposable income and more spending power.

Overall, advertisements still influence 90% of consumers in their purchasing decisions, and consumers — regardless of generation — are most likely to make a purchase after seeing or hearing an advertisement on TV and in print, according to the study.

“Baby Boomers have already gotten set in their ways in regards to the brands they prefer, so an ad might not convince them to buy something,” said Rob Albertson, managing director of Bandwidth Marketing. “There’s an aspect of spontaneity in millennials that would cause them to try something.”

DISNEY/21st CENTURY FOX DEAL IS CLOSE

Disney hopes to buy the 20th Century Fox movie and television studios; 22 regional cable networks dedicated to sports; Fox’s stake in the Hulu streaming service; cable networks like FX and National Geographic; and stakes in two overseas television-service providers.

BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER

Bigger is Not Always Better when it comes to developing healthcare advertising for your station.

Remember, for every hospital that is number one in a market, there are two that want to be. When it comes to profit and ad spending, the services hospitals provide are more important than how large they are. The largest hospitals also tend to provide level one trauma care - and often lose money.

A hospital in your market may be 1/3 the size of the largest hospital yet generate 3x the profit and have 3x the ad budget. The important thing when targeting a hospital is to look at the services they provide.

Hospitals get their patients in two ways: one is physician referrals; the other is consumer driven. Today, patients have access to an abundance of healthcare information that can be confusing at best or misleading at worst. In areas of care such as cancer, cardiology and orthopedics, the decision where to get treatment is often driven by consumer research. The challenge hospitals face is reaching those who have already been diagnosed and are in the decision-making mode for treatment.

We’ve learned over the years that when developing a relationship with a healthcare provider in your market, the more you understand their goals, the more successful you’re going to be. For more info, please CLICK HERE.

GOOGLE PULLS AHEAD OF FACEBOOK

Google and Facebook have long been fighting for referral traffic, but Google came out on top in 2017. A study by Parse.ly found that in 2017, Google was responsible for 44 percent of external referral traffic on web publishers’ sites and Facebook was responsible for 26% of that referral traffic, per Recode. The study looked at 2,500 publishers. The numbers are a dramatic change from the first month of 2017, when Facebook provided 40% of external referrals, and Google provided 34%. Facebook has made some important moves in the last few years that could have had an effect on the numbers. Last year, Facebook altered its algorithm to prefer posts from family and friends, rather than publishers. While that does not mean publisher posts were not seen, it became a lot more difficult without paying to increase reach. Facebook also prefers videos posted directly to Facebook, rather than from YouTube or another external site, which does not always give viewers a reason to click to that publisher’s website.

VERIZON MAKES NFL STREAMING DEAL

The National Football League and Verizon have renegotiated their deal to stream football games on mobile devices. According to CBS Sports, the deal is worth $2.5 billion over five years, and means Verizon will be the exclusive streaming partner of the NFL, and “will stream in-market and national games, including national pre-season, regular season, playoff games and the Super Bowl nationwide, regardless of mobile network.” Verizon’s previous deal with the NFL only allowed streaming to cell phones or other devices with screens under seven inches. This deal allows Verizon to stream to nearly every device. While all in-market games will be included, out-of-market games will still require a cable subscription and login. The games will include ads, and it seems likely Verizon’s sales team will tout their ad-targeting abilities that advertisers might not be able to find on TV.
