Course Description
Congratulations on choosing to take your art to the next level by signing up for Advanced Drawing and Painting! With demonstrated work habits, personal responsibility, self-motivation and independent learning skills, Advanced Drawing and Painting students will continue to develop their drawing and painting skills with a deeper emphasis on experimentation with images and materials and development of personal voice as an artist. Students are working towards originality, exploring a variety of materials, and are willing to take risk with new ideas. Students will apply and understand the elements and principles of design when setting goals. Students will learn how to use the language of art to describe their artwork and the artwork of others. Students are required to keep a personal sketchbook to demonstrate research, reflection and evaluation. Students in their first year of the course will work on assigned projects. Students in their second or third year will have the option to work independently, depending on depth and breadth of prior work. This class is a prerequisite to AP Drawing. All work created in this class and in Introduction to Drawing and Painting may be used in the AP Drawing Portfolio. Please save and document/photograph all work! Let’s make some art! This is the year your work will truly become your own.
GRADING:
Grading is based on total points earned and the state standards for the arts.
Each of the following are awarded points:
- SKETCHBOOK:
Students will be provided a high quality mixed media sketchbook to be used for research, materials practice, designing of projects, and drawing practice. The advanced artist is in a constant state of creation. Points will be awarded based on personal voice and consistency of use. This sketchbook is a dynamic tool. Take it everywhere! Sketch what you see, sketch from imagination, glue in images, write down ideas, but most of all, make this sketch book your own! Strong sketchbook drawings may be included in your final portfolio if you take AP Drawing next year.
- STUDIO PROJECTS
First year Advanced students will create several projects taking several weeks each. Students will follow the following “art production cycle” and will earn points based on their completion of the entire cycle. The following are a list of possible projects for this year, with the understanding that projects may change depending on the interests and needs of the students:
□Linear perspective Drawing
□Abstract Painting using color schemes.
□Scale drawing using extreme eye levels.
□Pastel abstractions of natural objects communicating a sense of place and mood through the use of colored light and expressive mark making.
□Surreal self-portrait ink and watercolor drawing using expressive mark making that communicates your personality. Include three symbolic objects imbedded in the scene or connected to the figure to create a surreal effect.
□Acrylic Painting of a montage using images cut out of magazines creating foreground, middle ground and back ground.
□Mixed Media Experimentation piece integrating drawing, collage and text.
- SERIES Students in their first year of Advanced Art will create small bodies of work based on a personal theme in the second semester. Students who have completed an AP Portfolio will work on a personal series much of the year. Because students work at different paces, grades for series will be based on the number of pieces students were able to create. The art production cycle will be used as a framework for the series.
- ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
□Scholastic art awards competition (Required)
□Portfolio day
□Adobe Youth Voices competition
□Other art competitions/service art

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES:
ARTISTIC INTEGRITY
All pieces must be the students’ own work using original ideas. Duplicating the work of others or blatantly using other people’s ideas is considered plagiarism. Any work that is plagiarized will result in zero points for that assignment. Repeated infractions will result in a referral and call home. In addition, the use of copyrighted images and logos is strongly discouraged unless the images are being used to make a social commentary or have been modified for the sake of satire. Throughout the year, artistic integrity will be stressed. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal artistic voice while researching and exploring the art of others.
Attendance:
- Absences: If a student misses a class, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed. He/she may ask a fellow student during studio time or see Mrs. Malak after school, during lunch, or during her prep period.
- Tardies: If a student is tardy, he/she should make every effort to enter the classroom quietly with as little interruption as possible. 1st period students who are over 10 minutes late will be marked absent and will need to check in with attendance before coming to class.
Behavior Plan:
If students follow the basic guidelines of the art room, all students should be able to be creative in a fun, productive working environment. If a student chooses not to follow the basic guidelines of the art room and chooses to inhibit his/her own learning or the learning of others, the following will take affect:
1st Warning: Verbal reminder of correct behavior
2nd Warning: Student will be asked to change seats or sit away from other students
3rd Warning: Student will be sent to Time Out room with an assignment to complete.
If a student continues with the behavior they will then earn a minor referral which will include the following:
1. Contact home.
2. Detention before school, after school, or during lunch.
All major referrals are dealt with by the vice principals. Extreme behaviors will result in an immediate major referral and removal from the classroom. Please see your student handbook for the list of behaviors which would result in a minor or major referral.
